Theodorus Afinius (Lucius Afinius Paterculus Theodorus; b. 22 March 1967) is a Latin cardinal, currently serving as Patriarch of Alba and Archbishop of Castellum since his appointment by Pope Julius IV on 22 January 2017. He previously served as Auxiliary Bishop of Castellum under Faustus Otovos from 2016 until 2017, and Bishop of Samnia after his consecration in 2015. He also served as Senior Secretary for Judicious Affairs within the Fabrian Magisterium.
Early life
Afinius was born in the town of Augusta Naonis, county Aurunci, Latium, as the eldest son and child of Adeodata (née: Voconia) and Constans Afinius, Lord Afinius of Damma. His father was a one-time Senator, representing the Naonis constituency as a member of the Conservative Party from 1970 until 1976. His mother is also the niece of XXXX, making Afinius his great-nephew and a cardinal-nephew, she is also among the last living male-line member of the Voconii family, whom were Counts of Aricia from the 17th century until the the death of Theodorus Voconius, 9th Count of Aricia in 1951. If Afinius had not become and ordained priest and his mother able to inherit, Afinius would have been heir apparent to the former noble title that is now in abeyance.
He attended public schools in rural Aurunci located in central Latium, and most notably Sanctus Iohannes Baptista Secondary School. After his commencement, Afinius enrolled at Accademia degli Apostoli, located in Fabria, for his tertiary education, he states his time at Apostoli was the driving factor that led to his decision to become a priest. While at Apostoli, his studies focused on religious studies, theology and a number of political science courses, earning a degree in Theology and Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
