The Thyssians (Thyssian: Thyssāni) are a tall, blue-skinned humanoid species from the planet Thyss in the Galactic Core. A terrestrial species, Thyssians are characterized by their erect posture and bipedal locomotion, traits shared by many, though not all, sentient species in the galaxy. Despite developing on Thyss, most Thyssian historians consider Rholosh to be the homeworld of the 'True Thyssians' (as-Şahi aj-Thyssāni).

The origins of the Thyssians are difficult to ascertain, owing partly to the moratorium on pre-Rholoshi historical research by the United Planets, and the destruction of a great deal of historical data by the nuclear war which devastated Thyss. The Thyssians survived, though their civilisation largely collapsed and their numbers began to dwindle due to high mortality rates and low fertility. Due to a religious and political schism initiated by Rholosh a minority of Thyssians migrated from Thyss and settled upon the planet Rholosh, over time becoming the majority of their species.

In the modern day the Thyssians are largely found in the United Planets, through which they play a major role in galactic politics as a founding species of the Interstellar Assembly and associated organisations. Along with the Drudari, Xyn, and Chirrin they are considered an Elder Race. Despite the equality provided for in the Constitution of the United Planets, the Thyssians are considered to be the preeminent race within the union. The galactic Thyssian population was estimated to be near 80.5 billion in 84 PA

Etymology and definition

In common usage, the word "Thyssian" generally refers to the only extant species of the genus ʿurūž—anatomically and behaviorally modern ʿuržān Thyssini.

The English adjective Thyssian is formed from a loanword from the Thyssian Thyss, coming from their the name of their planet of origin, together with the suffix -ian, from Latin -iānus, which forms adjectives of belonging or origin from a noun. The majority of human languages use the English form as a root or loanword.

The Thyssian adjective Thyssāni is a similar construction to its English counterpart, coming from the word Thyss, the name of their homeworld (Old Thyssian: Tʰās, centre), together with the indefinite plural suffix -āni.

The species binomial "ʿuržān Thyssini" was coined by Şuloş şe Ji çeş Juwukh in 2 PA, after the formation of the Interstellar Assembly's Classification and Codification Authority. The generic name "ʿurūž" is the indefinite informal version of the word for 'Species', with "ʿuržān Thyssini" translating as 'Thyssian species'.
