It is currently only one of three universities or college to operate under its original imperial charter, despite attempts to govern the university under an Act of the Senate. The university consists of 12 constituent colleges, and 5 research institutes. The university houses the second oldest medical school in Latium, and was the first to admit and issue degrees to women.
It is among the largest universities in Latium by campus size, and fourth largest by number of enrolled number of students. The largest colleges at Castellum are Castellum College, Imperial College Castellum, St George's College and Empress Alexandra College. Among the colleges, the College of Law, and Empress Alexandra College are among the most prestigious, featuring the most alumni to serve as Consul of Latium, or other government positions in Latium or abroad.
History
Castellum College was the first university charted in Castellum ab Alba, and has existed in various incarnations since its founding under the name University of the Palatine and Hall of Caesar in 425. The original college was later closed and refounded no fewer than three times, with a continuous existence as Castellum College since 1777. Since that time, a number of other colleges or universities were established in Castellum, though most were not universities in the modern sense. By the mid-19th century, there were calls to reform the university system in Castellum, and in 1887, John, Prince of Youth became the patron of the Prince of Youth Institute. Upon his ascension as Latin Emperor John XIII, he sought to reform education in Castellum and place it under a single entity. In an 1897 decree, and subsequent imperial charter, the University of Castellum was established and was granted the ability to award and confer degrees. The 1897 charter placed the newly formed university as the main governing body of all colleges within Castellum, and established four other colleges, making a total of eight. In 1925, the university was renamed after Emperor John XIII.
