Zanaro, officially The Zanarite Commonwealth (Zanarite: Hael'kalmyak no Zanaro), is an island country in East Nori. Located in the Inoran Ocean it is located east of the Nori continent, north-east of Meniti island, west of the Gulf of Fei and south of the (unnamed) peninsula. Zanaro is a stratovolcanic archipelago consisting of about 4,324 islands. The three largest are Oshima, Kojima, and Kitajima, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Zanaro's land area and often are referred to as home islands. The country is divided into 3 menmber-states, which are each furhter divided up into various Ara, with Ositajan being the northernmost member-state and Ashahieru being the southernmost one. The population of 32 million is the world's (number) largest, of which 76.32% are ethnic Zanarite. 70% of people live in cities, while 30% live in the countryside. About 10 million people live in Torman, the capital of Zanaro. The Greater Torman Area is the second most populous metropolitan area in the world with over 18 million people inhabiting it.

The Zanarite commonwealth was founded at the end of the Olympic War, uniting the Koto'Ara of Zanaro the Dai'Ara of Ashahieru and the Daihyo'Tuka of Ositijan. Each member of these member states would select a series of three representatives who would meet with the Kotonashi of Zanaro as the Commonwealth Ruling Council. Each nation disbanded hteir own independnet military forces and instead all military forces were now part of the Commonwealth Military. Member-States of the Zanarite Commonwealth share a common currency, and enjoy freedom of movement between each other. This allows for a robust trade in resources, ideas, and in military capability.

Geography

Zanaro is a mountainous archipelago located in the western part of the Aurum Ocean. It has tectonic active on a fairly regular basis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunami do occur within the Norunda Archipelago. The south of Zanaro is warm and tropical, while the far north is cold and rocky.

History

The precursor to the Zanarite Commonwealth was founded during the liberation of the South-Eastern Nori states from Liran colonial powers, the Nori Joint Prosperity Sphere. To ensure the security and safety from foreign aggressors all states that were liberated by Zanaro were brought into the newly formed NJPS on a temporary basis. The goal was to help these nations recover and become self-sustaining. After a fifteen year period all member nations would be given the choice to either separate from the NJPS, or to seek permanent membership in the it. After the end of the Olympic War the NJPS was disbanded, though the nations of Ashahieru and Ositijan sought to join Zanaro as semi-independent states. To accommodate this the Koto'Ara reorganized it's structure and formed the Commonwealth with the Koto'Ara as a member-state of it.

The Olympian War

1913CE-1924CE

At the dawn of the first Olympic War the Koto'Ara of Zanaro found itself alone in a world split between two factions. It cared little for the ideological concerns that were devastating Lyra and the surrounding areas and instead saw an opportunity to free Nori from Liran oppression. It founded the Nori Co-prosperity sphere to help bring together the various Nori nations, and strengthen them. In addition Zanaro began to conduct an aggressive wart against the Empire of Produzland-Amidia and liberate the various Nori states.

Zanaro first invaded the Ashahieru islands, and reinstalled the local monarchy which had been deposed for over a century by Produz rule. In addition the Ashahieru islands were brought into the NJPS as a protectorate state until it was rebuilt and able to stand on it's own again. This same style of invasion and restoration continued throughout East and South-East Nori. Many states that had no monarchy prior suddenly found themselves with a new noble caste and the introduction of the Zanarite educational system. In addition it was dictated that freedom of religion would be required in all these Protectorate states.

After the end of OW1 each protectorate was given a treaty stating that Zanaro would remain in control of the nation for fifteen years to help rebuild and advance the various nations, at the same time the NJPS was disbanded. Local government would be strengthened throughout that time and after 15 years they would be released from protectorate status and independence returned. The Zanarite Commonwealth was beginning to be negotiated with the protectorate state of Ashahieru and Ositijan by Kotonashi-ko Rin Kurohiun.

The Great Cold War

1925CE-2011CE

August 12, 1937 saw the founding of the Zanarite Commonwealth consisting of Zanaro and several nations that had been liberated during the Olympic War. The formation of the Commonwealth was overseen by Kotonashi-ko Rin Kurohiun. It was one of her final acts before retiring from the post and placing her eldest son Akira Kurohiun on the Imperial Throne.

Kotonashi Mal Kurohiun XII, assumed the throne in the year 1981CE after his elder brother, Ikirishan Kurohiun, denied ascending the throne to become a Zaijii of the Soriven faith. With this abdication Kotonashi Mal Kurohiun began an aggressive redevelopment program for the Commonwealth Military and dedicated large portions of the nations coffers to a complete overhaul of the Commonwealth Navy, and development of new top of the line stealth fighter craft. It was Kotonashi Mal Kurohiun who oversaw the development of the modern military doctrine of Zanaro. In the year 1983CE Pronjii-ko Hanako Kurohiun, the potential heir to the throne of Zanaro, was married off to King Daniól I of The Kingdom of Produzire. This was officially done in an attempt to normalize relations with the Kingdom, but as part of this marriage Pronjii-ko Hanako had to renounce her claims to the Zanarite throne.

Shortly after the marriage of Hanako to King Daniól I trade between the two nations began to blossom. During this same time period Kotonashi Mal began to fund research into developing nuclear powered carriers, subs, and power plants. These nuclear ambitions for power though were not the stopping point, the Koto'Ara also began research into Nuclear weaponry. These nuclear projects would be implemented into the Imperial Navy redesign to ensure that the Koto'Ara could project it's power as needed to ensure it could maintain it's sovereignty.

1985 saw the formation of Council for Stability and Order ((CSTOR)), this military and economic alliance was founded by the Commonwealth of Zanaro, Lunderfrau and Eskeiura. The Primary aspects included free-trade, protected trade-routes, a mutual military alliance, and technology sharing between the signatory nations. Additional signatory nations would become junior members for five years before they would be granted full membership.

In the year 1987CE the first of the new nuclear carriers was added to the Imperial Navy, it was shortly followed by three more. At the same time Kotonashi Mal called to an end to Nuclear Weapons research as he would not allow tests to be actively conducted in Zanarite territory out of concern for his subjects and the environment. The completed research though was kept, and cursory research would continue from then on.

Kotonashi Mal's first born child, Kazuto, would be born in the year 1989. This ensured that there was an heir to the Zanarite throne from the immediate imperial family.

The Period of Uncertainty

2011CE-Present

With the signing of the KDENT act in 2011, which would force the nation of Kiteahu to cease all nuclear weapons research, Kotonashi Mal Kurohiun XII released a public statement decrying the treatment of the nation. Stating that this act continued to show how the Liran nations would continue to walk all over the nations of Nori. Shortly after issuing the statement though the Kotonashi would retreat to the sacred temple of Kairi in the Uhein In'Ara. The Voice of the Kotonashi, Verako Kirisawa, would act in the Kotonashi's place during Imperial Diet meetings for the next year and a half. In 2012 Kotonashi Mal Kurohiun XII was announced dead, having succumbed to an aggressive cancer, with many speculating it was due to his direct involvement with the nuclear development projects of the 80's. With his death Koto'Pronjii Kazuto Kurohiun, who was serving in the Imperial Intelligence Agency at the time, was recalled to the Imperial City where he was crowned the new Kotonashi of Zanaro.

Kotonashi Kazuto Kurohiun II would follow closely in his fathers footsteps in regards to the military and education policies that he had put into place. In addition to these policies Kotonashi Kazuto would also begin to focus on the long held dream of a United Nori, where the various Nori nations would work together to ensure mutual defense, trade, and development. This was a dream that had been one of the goals during the founding of the Commonwealth. To facilitate this development Kotonashi Kazuto would seek to expand foreign trade relations with various Nori states.

In 2018, with support from the Koto'Ara of Zanaro, the Kingdom of Parthonopia would be inducted as a CSTOR Observer. In 2019 the Commonwealth of Zanaro would announce Project Rebirth, the culmination of years of development by the Commonwealth. Project Rebirth was directed at providing cheap and reliable renewable technologies to South East Nori to help those nations combat the effects of Climate Change.

Politics

Government

The Zanarite Commonwealth is led by the Commonwealth Ruling Council which consists of three representatives from each of the member-states, and the Kotonashi of Zanaro. Each member-states dictates independently how these representatives are selected. From among these representatives a Secretary of the Commonwealth, and a Secretary of the Defense of the Commonwealth are selected through a nomination and voting system. The Kotonashi of Zanaro, or an appointed representative of the Kotonashi oversees all meetings of the Commonwealth Ruling Council.

Commonwealth Ruling Council

The Commonwealth Council consists of three representatives from each of the member-states of the Zanarite Commonwealth. The Council is charged with the creation of international trade, agreements, alliances, and aggressive wars. It also exists to foster growth and communication between all member-states, as well as create regulations to be carried out by the member-states. These regulations do need to be submitted to the national rule making body of each member-state to attain approval. If any member-state did not approve the measure it does not pass. In the case it does pass then the regulation shall be signed into official regulation by the Kotonashi of Zanaro.

Security

Military

The military makes up approximately 1% of the population of the Commonwealth of Zanaro. It is a highly trained and well equipped military force focusing on small fire teams, and naval forces. Due to their naval specialization the army focuses mostly in the defense of the nations capital, and official military parades. Their expeditionary forces specialize in quick strikes and being mobile, allowing them to strike and move quickly, but they are not very effective at holding ground at one location for an extended period of time. A vast majority of the military exists in the form of the Navy and Marine forces, with the Army and Air-force being far smaller. The Military of Zanaro uses only one ranking structure for the whole of its military forces. This was done so as to create less confusion and conflict between the various military branches in service to the Commonwealth. In addition it sets a clear line of authority in joint operations with certain branches having higher authority in situations of shared rank.

The Zanarite military is flawed in that it is dominated by nepotism throughout the officer core. A vast majority officers are members of the nobility, either through birth, or through becoming a Kenjin. Officers who are not members of the Nobility are very unlikely to attain any major post or position, instead relegated to secondary positions, rarely attaining anything higher than O-4. Due to this nepotistic mentality among the higher ranking members of the Kenjin rarely attain ranks higher than O-6. The Zanarite ground forces focuses more on being a quick mobile force, which keeps them from being particularly effective in a head on head ground fight, they prefer to be on the move. Tanks and slower moving vehicles are typically in rare usage as such, reducing their capability to fight in traditional ground warfare.

The Commonwealth Legion

The Commonwealth Legion primarily focuses on the defense of the capital city of Torman, as well as being the honor guard for the Imperial Family. Often times the Commonwealth Legion will be at the center of military parades, alongside special units from the other military branches. While the Commonwealth Legion is the smallest branch it is still highly trained.

The Commonwealth Navy

Commonwealth Naval Ship doctrine focuses on the use of Aircraft Carriers and support ships to defend them. Many of these carriers will serve as the command ship for their task-force, with special focus going to the Super Carriers. The ships are designed to be able to strike nearly any nation that would threaten Imperial interests, and secure the territorial waters of the Commonwealth and its allies. While slower than most other naval forces with the use of aircraft they are able to strike from a sizable distance before being detected.

The Commonwealth Airforce

The Commonwealth Airforce is designed to support Commonwealth Naval air-ops and the security of the the Ashahierun archipelago, Norunda archipelago, and the Ositijani archipelago as a whole. The use of the STOVL system on many of the Airforce's jets allow for them to be exceedingly maneuverable for their deployment locations. In addition it is expected the Commonwealth Airforce pilots can land aboard Imperial Navy Aircraft carriers.

The Commonwealth Marines

The Commonwealth Marines are the second largest branch within the Commonwealth Military and their training and equipment emphasizes the use of Maneuver Warfare over Attrition Warfare. They focus on small unit tactics and out maneuvering their foes.

Six main elements of the Commonwealth Marines war doctrine

• Tempo: Noting the shift of battles and utilizing those shifts to push for a strategic victory.
• Focal Point: Finding and targeting the enemy at the right place at the right time, striking vital locations that are under-guarded.
• Deception: Utilizing false information and trickery to ensure surprise and advantage.
• Combined Arms: The use of a variety of weapons systems within a combat element as well as the support of non-ground elements. eg: Naval Air command
• Flexibility: The ability to adjust equipment, gear, and plans on a moments notice. These units must be well rounded, have redundancies, and be self contained.
• Decentralized Command: Lower level leadership must be able to make decisions quickly without need to communicate with higher ups at all points. This means that lower level leadership must know the intent and overall strategy prior to beginning missions but have the flexibility to adjust a tactical level to ensure command operations are completed.

Special Forces

The Imperial Intelligence Agency while not directly part of the Department of War it acts as the Special Forces and Special Operations for the Department of War. The entire agency even utilizes the military ranking and command structure. The IIA is officially part of the Koto'Ara of Zanaro, but acts throughout the whole of the Commonwealth.

Domestic Security

The various member-states each maintain there own localized policing force, the member-states though are not allowed to have an independent military force.

Economy

Zanaro's economy specializes in the production of various defensive military technologies, and weapons systems. These include ships, and aircraft. In addition the nation is well known for its advancements in the software and computer sciences. These advancements are typically leveraged for the benefit of the military industrial complex, but there is a growing demand for electronic media in the form of video games. Zanaro continues to make huge strides in the field of Renewable Energy and has begun to export its completed systems to other nations.

Renewable Energy

The Zanarite Commonwealth has been a long proponent of the development and use of Renewable Energy, this is in part due to the nations reliance on foreign energy sources. In the late 70's they began a strong push into developing and mastering Renewable Energy in the hopes of becoming fully energy self-sufficient. They have conducted and developed various forms of Renewable Energy sources such as Solar Panels, Tidal Energy, Geo-Thermal, Wind, Hydro-Electric, and Nuclear Power. Their expertise in Renewable Energy is perhaps on of the most well-known and well regarded aspects of their economy and society. Their specialization and focus on renewable sources has led to the nation already having an exceedingly small carbon footprint compared to most other nations in GO but they have begun to redouble there efforts in going 100% green within ten years (2029).

Population

Most of the population of Zanaro are ethnically Zanarite, making up 76.32% of the nations population. The next largest group are native Ashahierun's which make up 10.26% of the population. The third largest group is the Ositijanii who make up 9.73% of the nations population. The remaining 4.69% of the nations population consists of other ethnicity from outside Zanaro. This information is not 100% exact as in the Koto'Ara proper anyone who is at least 50% Zanarite are counted towards the Zanarite population total and not towards any other total.

Education

Education in the Commonwealth is seen as one of the core pillars of society, and the nation as a whole. Due to this mentality the Zanarite Education system has focused on high quality, in-depth, and specialized education to ensure its citizens can best serve the Commonwealth to the best of their ability. All schools beyond tier one provide room and board for students who will live on campus at the school for a majority of the year. During vacation times they will return home to their families to reside with them. The education system is based off of the same one used by the Koto'Ara of Zanaro prior to the formation of the Commonwealth. The Daihyo'Tuka of Ositijan uses a slightly modified version of the education system by removing the Noble side of the education system as they do not have nobility and are instead a republic.

Tier One

Elementary School Preschool - 5th Grade All Classes are Mandatory and well rounded in all subjects, allowing for children to grow and develop in many ways. This is also where children usually study Zanarite, and any secondary languages required by the Member-state. Some of the mandatory classes include Math, Science, History, PE, and Art.

Nobility Early-Life Academy Preschool - 5th Grade The children on Nobility are sent to a specialized school where they begin to be educated in the responsibilities that they will one day have to fulfill as the future leaders of the nation. This is in addition to the education that is taught in the non-Nobility Elementary schools.

Tier Two

Vocational School 6th Grade - 9th Grade Schooling that begins to specialize students towards a specific vocation, be it a trade, religious service, or something else. This school is meant to be an introductory level, and still has many of the general classes available, allowing students to pick a different Tier Three school should they so choose.

Academy of Science and Technology 6th Grade - 9th Grade A school for kids who were in the top ten percentile in Math, or Science in the National Standardized Tests (N.S.T.). The school focus's on the development of the students progress in the sciences and in mathematics.

Academy of Military Sciences 6th Grade - 9th Grade A School for students interested in Military service as either an Enlisted or as an Officer. This school focus's on development of leadership and in strategy (Both Militarily and Civilian side).

Middle School 6th Grade - 9th Grade A well rounded school that aids in the development of a well balanced student and future member of the Commonwealth of Zanaro. This is where most students begin taking a third language.

Nobility Middle Academy 6th - 9th Grade The school further teaches the Noble youth leadership skills, governance, military leadership, as well as important life skills such as reading, writing, mathematics, sciences, and history. Students also are given a number of options for elective classes such as martial arts, music, art, and creative pursuits.

Tier Three

Academy of Advanced Sciences and Technology 10th-13th Grade A school for those that after completing the N.S.T. were in the top 10% of the nation for Math or any of the sciences. This will begin to set the student up for a career as a scientist, researcher, inventor, or engineer.

Academy of Art and Music 10th-13th Grade A School for those who were hand selected because of there skill and talent by the Arts and Music Administration (A.M.A.), the students will focus there natural talents into a beautiful skill. Many will continue to the University of The Arts and become members of some of the greatest Orchestra's and Art Institutions within Zanaro.

Academy of Advanced Military Sciences 10th-13th Grade A School for Students who wish to focus there career's in the Military sphere. Students will pick a branch there senior year to begin studying under. This academy has many apprenticeship and mentoring programs to aid in the students development as a future Member of the Commonwealth Military.

Academy of the Trades 10th - 13th Grade This is the primary Trade school for students. Graduating from here will land a student a job easily, without a need to go to additional college level education except for additional specialization if there is interest.

Academy of the Spirit 10th - 13th Grade Students that go to school here will begin to learn how best to serve the spiritual and religious needs of their community. There are multiple religions available to study in, as well as multi-religious, and spiritual courses. Students would still need to go to Theology school at the college level in most cases to serve their faith group as a priest/priestess depending on the religion.

High School 10th-13th Grade A well rounded school for students who didn't seek out, or earn a specialty school. This school focus's on building upon prior education and gives students the most option of class's to take.

Nobility Leadership Academy 10th - 13th Grade The Nobility who attend this exclusive and elite school focus on military and political leadership. They are taught tactics, strategy, history, and train in several martial arts. It is a high demand school that is known to have a few students die from the training every year. After graduation many will begin the process of becoming officers in the military, or begin apprenticing for a major leadership position among the great houses of Zanaro.

Nobility Academy 10th - 13th Grade Most members of the Nobility will attend this school which will continue to prepare them to run the nations sprawling noble bureaucracy. They will also continue their education and training in the cultural aspects of nobility and of 'higher' society of Zanaro.

Tier Four

University of Science of Technology College The University of Science and Technology is one of the Largest Universities within Zanaro and it is focused entirely on the development of scientific minds, and on advancements within different scientific fields. It is funded through both the Government and several major Technology and Science based state-corporations. Many of which recruit graduates immediately after they finish schooling.

University of The Arts College The only true art college, The University of The Arts is exceedingly picky on who it allows in. It is funded mostly by nobility who are always looking to increase the prestige of their court. To be have a noble family become your patron is considered a great honor.

University of Medicine and Life Sciences College This college is dedicated to the development of a professional medical force, training nurses, doctors, surgeons, and medical researchers. The various programs provide specialization, or generalization as needed.

Naval War College/Army War College/Air Force War College/ Marine War College College The college for the best and brightest who seek to be an officer in the Commonwealth Military. Upon completion of the school you will serve a Four Year term in the branch that you went to the college for. Upon completion of the school the student will become an officer assigned to a Noble Commander.

General College College A General college typically offers a wide range of majors and minors for students to pursue. Some will be specialized, some wont be, but they all have one thing in common options.

Lords College of War College The Lords War College is attended by all Nobility who seek to become Commanders within the military. Most members who attend this college had previously attended the Nobility Leadership Academy. The College builds upon the education that the academy taught to its students. It is a highly competitive environment meant to create the best military and noble leaders possible as they have trained most of their lives to be leaders and politicians.

University of Lords College The College available to all nobility. Here they will hone their skill and craft in running and ruling the nation, and the various parts of the Imperial Bureaucracy.

Health

The Commonwealth of Zanaro utilizes a nationalized healthcare system that oversees the overall health of the subjects of the nation. Healthcare is available at no cost for all subjects of the Commonwealth, and for a small monthly fee for foreign tourists and other non-subjects.

Marriage

Gay marriage had been legal in Zanaro since at least the early 1900's. In addition multi-spousal marriages for nobility have been allowed since the 1500's which allowed for homosexual unions so long as there was also a heterosexual union involved. Marriage between nobility and non-nobility remains rare even in modern times, but with Non-nobility ascending to the ranks of nobility fairly regularly there has been a surprisingly small amount of inbreeding. Ositijan has had legalized same-sex marriage since the late 1700's. As such same-sex marriage and multi-spousal marriages are legal throughout the whole of the Commonwealth.
