Emerstari has a multi-party system with three dominant political parties complemented by several other significant and minor parties. Political parties in Emerstari first began to form in the seventeenth century as loose alliances of interests and individuals. It was not until the early eighteenth century that political parties in the modern sense began to form like the Monarchic Party and the Vernon Party.
In practice, Emerstari has a multi-party system, consisting of three dominant political parties and several minor parties. In fact, however, few formal political parties exist in Emerstari. This is to say, only a few Emerstarian political parties have formalized leadership, stances, and organization. All the other parties are more or less just loose groups of politicians that associate with each other to, on a national level at least, form alliances and cater to voters. Formalized political parties are typically smaller and/or more fringe groups such as the Socialist Party of Emerstari and For Emerstari group.

By the twentieth century, the Republican Party and the Liberal Party formed, and during that century, numerous other parties would form as well. Today, the Monarchic Party still dominates Emerstari politics, but the Vernon Party is challenged by the Republican Party.
