The Nykov Ny-122 (CDI reporting name: Backfall) is a twin-engine supersonic, variable-geometry wing long-range strategic and maritime strike bomber developed by the Nykov.

History

Following the successful advantages of variable-geometry wings concept as demonstrated with the development of the Ay-04 project, Nykov designers saw the benefits that allow a combination of short take-off performance, efficient cruising, and good high-speed, low-level ride. The result was in 1973 a new swing-wing prototype aircraft called YP-1022, derived from the work achieved on the Ay-04 program, The YP-1022 was first proposed as high performance airliner, but military quickly saw potential with the program. By 1976 the first Ny-122 production plant was completed construction of the first pre production aircraft which began their flight testd. Even before the completion of the tests, it was decided to begin serial production of the aircraft. Until the end of 1977 at eight pre-production aircraft were build. Some of them are used to test the final design of the aircraft and its systems.

By the time of full scale production the design was revised, thus the initial prototypes differed greatly from the final production variant. The early pre-production models did not enter widespread production and instead it was decided to build a further development of the type with new improved engines Arsanukayev AVT-15, which got rid of many of the shortcomings of previous version. From 1982 on wards widespread production was achieved although the design was continuous updated throughout its life. In order to respond to new and emergent threats from the growing CDI forces in the region.

Design

The Ny-122 is a variable-geometry wing aircraft. It is powered by two Arsanukayev AVT-15 afterburning turbofan engines, and is equipped with a probe-and-drogue in-flight refueling system for extended-range missions. It has a crew of four (pilot, co-pilot, bombardier, and defensive systems operator), weapons are carried in two internal bays, each capable of holding free-fall weapons or a rotary launcher for nuclear missiles; additional missiles may also be carried externally. The aircraft's total weapons load capacity is 24,000 kg (53,000 lb) . However, no defensive weapons are provided.

Advanced variant with upgraded avionics and the ability to use precision weapons air-to-surface, glass cockpit, in flight refueling, improved engines. It is planned to set them on a new hardware component base and adapted to the extended range weapons.
Ny-122X ("Backfall-B")
Export model, initially consisting of a rebuild of the first-generation Ny-122s. Currently consist of new build aircraft to a similar standard as the intial Ny-122 standard.
Ny-122XM ("Backfall-F")
Export model based on the Ny-122M that Nykov first presented them as part of plans for expanding ANKITEC international offering in 2005.
Ny-122XMR ("Backfall-C")
Export model based on Ny-122RDM reconnaissance version.
