He has been Auxiliary Imam since his accession on 22 November 1960 when he succeeded his grandfather, Siyyid Husayn al-Karim, at the age of 23.
Name
Born Prince Hakim al-Rahim, he chose the regnal name Hussain al-Hakim Billah upon acceding to the Auxiliary Imamate. The title Siyyid is prefixed to the name of every Auxiliary Imam. In common parlance, he is often referred to by the name Siyyid Hussain or simply by his ex officio title 'The Auxiliary Imam'.
Early life and education
Hakim is the eldest son of Prince Amin al-Bahri Hikmat-i-llah, the son of the 32nd Auxiliary Imam, and Princess Kazima al-Bahri Hikmat-i-llah (née Catherina van Limburg Stirum). He has a younger brother, Prince Hasan. Hakim belongs to the Batini family, which is recognised as one of the princely families of Hindia Belanda and the only one that does not have a right to sit in the Dewan Bangsawan, the upper chamber of the Hindia Belandan parliament. His family has produced twenty Auxiliary Imams since the accession of Siyyid Ishaq II, the 14th Auxiliary Imam, in 1592.
