The monarchy of Herastadt, also known as the Heran monarchy, refers to the institution of constitutional monarchy active in Herastadt and its dependencies and federated subjects. Established by Kostav I in 1395, it has since shaped and dominated the Heran political, social and cultural spheres. The current Prince is Kristian II of the House of Lindonis, eldest child to former monarch Anna I, who abdicated on 9 May 2015.
The Heran monarchy was founded after consolidation of the various petty kingdoms of the Parazin Isles, which found their root in the aftermath of the Dardenic invasions of the 7th century. This unification was accomplished by the actions of the Confederation of Saint Hera, an alliance of Doxologic states clamouring for unity against foreign threats and aggressors. These efforts were headed by Kostav I, Duke of Pirakon, who led the Confederation to unify the isles through war, political maneuvering, and intrigue between the years 1380 and 1395. This culminated in Kostav's coronation as "Prince-Steward", a self-styled non-monarchical title which remained in use until 1761 with the Imperial Declaration of 1761, and used again in the years 1909-1926 from the Restoration until Democratization.
The powers of the monarchy have varied wildly throughout the centuries since its foundation; with the early Prince-Stewards battling to enforce their will against rebellious vassals, while later emperors enjoyed near absolute executive power. In the modern day, the administrative power of the monarch has been largely stripped away, with this role being filled by the position of Chancellor; an elected head which oversees governance of the nation itself. Modern Heran monarchs have instead functioned as semi-symbolic figureheads of the de-facto national democratic institutions. Monarchs additionally serve the all-important roles of foreign diplomat and ambassador for Herastadt.
Prince-Steward of Herastadt (1395–1761)
House of Astulf
The Astulfings were a Dardenic noble house which were descendant from Conrad I, the illegitimate son of Astulf I, Count of Petra. After succeeding his father in 922, Conrad and his descendants would go on to consolidate power over much of southern Herastadt; attaining control of the Duchy of Pirakon under Sigeric III in 1186, and eventually establishing rule over all Herastadt under Kostav I by 1395. Throughout the reign of the Astulfings Herastadt saw an era of peace and stability, along with the establishment of institutions such as the Council of Banners and Chamber of Seneschals to help solidify their power while also appeasing their vassals and subjects. Crisis arose after the death of the childless Kostav III in 1507, with factions in the nobility forming in support of his agnatically-related grand-nephew Mathias or cognatically-related nephew Tasso. This boiled over into a short civil war which ended in the murder of Mathias and ascension of Tasso at the head of a new dynasty.

House of Corgau
Tasso I was named Prince-Steward on 20 September 1507; ending the reign of the House of Astulf and marking the beginning of the House of Corgau. Prior to Tasso's ascension the House of Corgau were petty barons of a small coastal holding near Karkebo, tracing their lineage back to a Dardenic sellsword from the 11th Century. Their reign was relatively short, but saw a period of rapid change and relative instability throughout the realm. Under Tasso I the Great Doxologic Split was endured, resulting in the XII. Catechism and foundation of the Southern Doxologic Temple. The reign of Kostav IV saw the Barons Rebellion and crippling of the powers of the landed nobility. The ascension of the child-prince Tasso II as monarch saw the final challenge to the throne by claimant Ludovic of House Tallemarz; who seized power in a palace coup at the Herasborg on April 23rd 1560, marking the end of the reign of House Corgau.

House of Tallemarz
Following his usurpation of the child-monarch Tasso II, Ludovic II spent his early reign as Prince solidifying the authority of his House across Herastadt; a problem which incessantly troubled the short reign of the Tallemarzes. Fascinated with tales of discovery and the unknown world, Ludovic commissioned the Westward Expedition of Captain Robert Sundegard in 1567 to discover the fabled spice isles of Armonidas. This in effect sparked the Age of Exploration after the discovery of the continent of Pachatan the following year. Throughout the remainder of Ludovic's reign further expeditions were mounted, and a multitude of trading posts were founded throughout the New World in their wake; establishing Herastadt as the first colonial power.
Following Ludovic's death he was succeeded by his eldest daughter Ludovica, the first female Prince of Herastadt. Ludovica's reign saw further expansion of colonial endeavors while also sponsoring academic projects throughout the realm. Of note was the foundation of the first Examinary School in 1595 and the establishment of the University of Pirakon in 1603. Additionally the law of Nomina Haereditem was introduced, which defined that female Prince-Stewards would legally carry the patrilineal line onto their children as part of succession. However following her death in 1622, Ludovica's children were passed over in succession to avoid a third succession crisis, with the throne being offered instead to her cousin Ludovic of House Luoweburg; a direct descendant of Tasso I through the bastard line of Ludovic I.

House of Luoweberg
The 125 year reign of House Luoweberg was the longest of Heran history until their surpassing by House Lindonis. During their tenure Herastadt underwent a stark transformation from a decentralized feudal backwater into a modern bureaucratic state headed by strong monarchical authority. These advances were largely attributable to Ludovic IV, Conrad II, and Ludovica II; who each championed various structural changes to the growing state. The reign of House Luoweberg also saw the further extensive colonization in the new world by Herastadt and other Esermian colonial powers; such as Normanfara and Bavmark. Increased competition for control of resources and territory led to the outbreak of the Plantation Wars between the major powers. These conflicts further acted as the catalyst to reveal major structural flaws in the Royal Army; leading to Conrad II's reforms which paved the way for August I's Imperial Army. Following the death of the childless Ludovica II in 1731, the throne was passed to her bastard brother Ludovic, as specified in her Will presented to the Chamber of Seneschals.
