Background
In the 1981 federal election, the Free Besmenian Citizen's Party (FBBP) became the strongest force with 31.2% of the vote, followed by the Besmenian People's Party (BVP) with 28.4% and the Social Democratic Union (SDU) with 16.1%. While the FBBP was able to gain votes, the BVP and SDU lost a significant number of votes. The Besmenian Republican Party (BRP) gained slightly in votes, reaching 10.0%. The Green Party of Besmenia gained slightly in votes and reached 6.0%. The Besmenian Libertarian Party (BELP), with 3.1%, was unable to return to the Federal Chamber, of which it was a member from 1968 to 1976.
