The Green Party of Besmenia (Besmenian: Grüne Partei Besmeniens), GPB (from 1978 until 1984 G.P.B.), often called The Greens, is a green political party in Besmenia.

The Green Party of Besmenia was founded on April 30, 1978. At that time several Green parties existed in Besmenia, with the GPB being the only one able to reach a high electorate, through which other Green parties disbanded or joined the GPB in the 1980s. Since 1980, the GPB has been consistently represented in the Federal Chamber. Until 2001, the party had a green conservative orientation and lay in the political spectrum between center and center right. After Sebastian Bergmann took over the party chairmanship in autumn 2001, the adoption of the Eisenberg theses on April 1, 2002 marked the end of the green conservative party program and the introduction of a new party program consisting of elements of progressivism and social liberalism. As a result, the once conservative GPB became a left-wing party, which lay in the political spectrum on center-left to left-wing.

At the federal level, the GPB participated in a joint coalition with the BVP from 1993 to 2001 under Prime Minister Erik Tautenbach. Since 2021, the party has been involved in the Besmenian federal government alongside the BVP and the SDU under Prime Minister Elisabeth Rademacher. At the 2015 Besmenian presidential election, GPB chairman Sebastian Bergmann, with the support of his party, was elected president by a majority. This made Bergmann the first green politician in Besmenia to hold one of the highest political offices. However, in the 2021 Besmenian presidential election, Bergmann lost to BVP candidate Vincent von Schilling in the second runoff.

In the 2022 Laitstadt state election, the GPB managed to win a state election in Besmenia for the first time with a result of 23.4%. After the election, Tanja Balzer-Künert was the first woman and GPB politician to be sworn in as Mayor and Governor of Laitstadt. Balzer-Künert was also the first GPB politician ever to serve as governor of a Besmenian federal state.

The core idea of green politics is sustainable development. The idea of environmental protection therefore runs through large parts of the program of the GPB. In particular, the economic, energy and transport policy requirements are closely interrelated with environmental policy considerations. Climate protection policy is at the center of all considerations. Analysis shows that the GPB's electorate is made up primarily of younger, female and metropolitan voters.

Social and economic policy

In social and economic policy, the GPB represent a relatively broad left-of-centre spectrum, based on a basic social attitude. The GPB advocates same-sex marriage and advocates for the rights and equality of minorities in Besmenia.

Foreign and security policy

In foreign and security policy, the GPB follows a cosmopolitan and pacifist course. The party endorses the Alliance of Nortuan States.

History

Bergmann era (2001-2014)

After the poor outcome of the GPB in the 2001 federal election, Bröckler announced his immediate resignation as party chairman in September 2001. Around this time, the GPB also saw massive voter losses in state elections. The election losses in 2000/2001 led to discussions within the party about a new party program or a new beginning. At the extraordinary party conference on October 30, 2001 in Behringen, the left wing of the GPB prevailed in a contest vote. At the party conference, Sebastian Bergmann was elected the new party chairman of the GPB by a majority. At the party conference on April 1, 2002 in Eisenberg, the Eisenberg theses were passed. The Eisenberg theses marked the final end of the green conservative party program and the introduction of a new party program consisting of elements of progressivism and social liberalism.

In the state elections in Laitstadt in June 2022, the GPB achieved its best result ever at state level with 23.4% of the votes cast. After the conclusion of a coalition agreement with the SDU and the PBL, Tanja Balzer-Künert was sworn in as Mayor and Governor of Laitstadt and became the first green governor of a Besmenian federal state.
