When they first entered service in 2001, they represented a revolution in Carlosian maritime doctrine. In addition to torpedo tubes, they are armed with 8 x VLS launchers for anti-ship and cruise missiles. As with previous attack submarine classes, all are named after Carlosian suburbs or small cities.
