After the resignation of Chancellor Paul Bachmeier as chairman of the Democratic Labour Party, Erhardt Preisner led the DAP to victory in the 2010 election, securing a narrow majority of 377 seats. His tenure was onset by low approval ratings amid a recession the aftermath of the 2010 Bertenau bombings. His government lost a vote of no confidence in the Federal Assembly in November 2011, and a general election was set for January 2012.
The DAP was faring poorly in the polls and its main competitor, the right-wing National Democratic Party, was experiencing a rapid rise after the election of assemblyman Kaspar Vahl as its leader.
