Albrecht Neumann was born on October 22, 1889 in the small town of Bartaz as son of railway attendant Konrad Neumann (1851-1922) and housewife Elfriede Müller (1857-1933). His brother Frank was born in 1894, but he died 2 months after the birth. From 1901 to 1907 he attended the state high school in Bartaz. After graduating in 1907, he trained as a carpenter until he entered the war in 1912.

Between 1912 and 1916 Neumann fought on the side of the Royal Army in the Besmenian Civil War. In March 1916, he was hospitalized due to brief blindness as a result of an injury.
