Alexandra was selected as a Populares faction list candidate for Senate ahead of the 2010 election. Since joining the Senate, she has been considered one of the more left-leaning members of the Populares.

She was re-elected in 2015, and again in 2020.

On 18 June 2018, Alexandra joined the Progressive frontbench.
