The United Democratic Emirates Armed Forces (Onzaian: القوات المسلحة للإمارات المتحدة المتحدة) refers to the various military branches of Onza: The Onzaian Army, Navy, Air Force, and National Guard. The Vice President of the Emirates is named the commander-in-chief of the armed forces in the Constitution, but every Vice President since has yielded the authority to the President of Onza. The armed forces of the UDE are relatively small in comparison to other nations, but nevertheless makes up a fairly large portion of Onzaian government expenditures, especially in recent years as the nation has become increasingly involved on the international stage. Ruh El-Mofty is the Minister of Defense and the overall leader of the armed forces.
In addition to serving the UDE, the armed forces are available to the Commonwealth of Democratic Nations in the incident that an international coalition is formed. Command of the armed forces can also be granted to a joint command in a Jisthaheva Treaty Organization-led coalition as well. The armed forces serve the primary purpose of defense, and have not been deployed since their inception alongside the nation's founding in 1940.
History
The armed forces were formally established in 1940, the year Onza ratified a new Constitution and became the United Democratic Emirates. Much of the structure and personnel makeup of the force was retained from the DPRO's military, which existed prior. However, a number of significant alterations to the management of the military are made in the Constitution.
Prior to this, the Onzaian military existed as a number of different units throughout the course of the nation's history. Early military organization was entirely different than military management strategies employed today, in part due to the vastly different form of warfare. The closest rendition to the modern variant was founded in 1803, when the Kalahari Empire instituted a number of military reforms that formalized the military and drastically overhauled its organization. The force was used primarily for purposes of imperialism, although on a few occasions, armies were deployed to the edges of the Empire to defend against rival civilizations.
The armed forces underwent a number of changes over the course of the century, but saw the next largest reorganization when Adewale Mudima usurped the Pharaoh in 1922 and declared himself President of the DPRO. One of his first moves as President involved updating the management of the military to be more in-line with neighbors such as Hipasia and Carcossica. In 1932, the force saw its numbers swell to an all-time high in response to the declaration of war from the People's Liberation Army and the start of the Onzaian Civil War. Under the command of Mwenye Amadi, the armed forces proved their prowess in battle as they handedly defeated the PLA's armies in most confrontations.
Since the establishment of the Constitution, the armed forces have had the opportunity to train alongside other armies in the CDN, including Newreyan marines and Ardaiman sailors. The armed forces also began counterterrorism training exercises in the 1980s in response to the growing threat from Saraibia, and has since levied and trained special forces units that are skilled in hostage rescue, target capture, medevac, biological weapon response, and bomb defusal.
Operations
Currently, the armed forces have no international deployments. However, Onzaian military units are stationed as cooperative units in a few CDN nations, as well as in Carcossica as a result of the JTO. The nation's wartime readiness was elevated in 2011 by then-President Xolani Kojo in response to intelligence developments that suggested the size of Saraibia's armed forces was growing more rapidly than previously thought. As a result, drills and major military exercises have become more commonplace, particularly in regions along the Onzaian-Saraibian border.
Some units of the Onzaian Navy have been pledged to the Arabekhi Anti-Piracy Task Force of the CDN -- a joint security operation between some Drago Entente members that aims to reduce piracy and police the waters in the North Opal Ocean around Arabekh. A small number of soldiers was also reassigned in 2017 to accompany a dispatch of medical ships stationed outside of Aramas to provide surplus medical facilities for the citizens of Troping and civilians in Aramas.
Currently, the largest operation actively maintained by the armed forces is the defense of the Onzaian-Saraibian DMZ. Soldiers from all branches regularly patrol the edge of the Kalahari Desert to prevent illegal immigrants from attempting to enter the nation, and also to receive refugees. The armed forces also regularly conduct exercises along this border, occasionally venturing deep into the desert to perform live-fire exercises.
