During the early republic, the Presidents served five year terms and were popularly elected, simply needing the highest percentage of votes. The early Presidency was weakened by an often divided legislature and political infighting, and was unable to solve chronic economic issues throughout the country. The political situation worsened over time, eventually resulting in the President, Vasil Stoychev, calling for snap elections; following a defeat, he attempted to stage a {{wp|self-coup}} of power. [[Simeon Kovachev]] led a counter-coup which saw the elected President, Constantin Atheodosi, taking office.
 
Kovachev and Atheodosi, seeking to prevent the partisan struggles of the Republic, wrote the [[Constitution of Tengaria|Second Constitution of Tengaria]], which among other things made the Presidency a much more powerful position than it was underneath the old constitution. The President appoints cabinet members, justices, and the members of the [[Senate (Tengaria)#State_Council|State Council]], has the power to veto any legislation of the [[Senate (Tengaria)#Chamber_of_Deputies|Chamber of Deputies]], must determine and implimate both domestic policy and foreign policy, and also has all of the ceremonial duties of a head of state. Ther are no restrictions on the number of terms a person could serve. The President of Tengaria (Tengarian: Presedint Tengarie) is the head of state and head of government of the Tengaria. The president has control the executive of the Tengarian government, and is the commander-in-chief of the Tengarian Armed Forces. The President is indirectly elected by the Aduna Nova, which is a electoral college. and serves a six year term.

During the early republic, the Presidents served five year terms and were popularly elected, simply needing the highest percentage of votes. The early Presidency was weakened by an often divided legislature and political infighting, and was unable to solve chronic economic issues throughout the country. The political situation worsened over time, eventually resulting in the President, Vasil Stoychev, calling for snap elections; following a defeat, he attempted to stage a self-coup of power. Simeon Kovachev led a counter-coup which saw the elected President, Constantin Atheodosi, taking office.

Kovachev and Atheodosi, seeking to prevent the partisan struggles of the Republic, wrote the Second Constitution of Tengaria, which among other things made the Presidency a much more powerful position than it was underneath the old constitution. The President appoints cabinet members, justices, and the members of the State Council, has the power to veto any legislation of the Chamber of Deputies, must determine and implimate both domestic policy and foreign policy, and also has all of the ceremonial duties of a head of state. Ther are no restrictions on the number of terms a person could serve. Since Simeon was elected President in 1958, the Presidency has remained firmly in control of the Patriotic Union. The current President is Teodora Kovacheva, the grandaughter of Simeon, who is currently serving her second term.

The President is the head of the Cabinet of Tengaria, which serves to advise the President and to oversee different departments of the executive branch. He is assisted in office chiefly by the Deputy President, who becomes acting President if the President dies in office. The Presidency of Tengaria has been criticised for many years by Eastern sources and poltical opponents for its dominant-party system control, ill-defined powers, corruption and authoritarianism.
