When the civil war came, Oliver enlisted into the army and fought in the fields as part of [[Papa's Private Army]]. Here, his chemistry skills were seen important by his commanding officer, then-Colonel [[Carl Regnitz]], who taught that he could create improvised bombs for raids against the rebels.
