Overview
Overview
Californian electoral politics have been dominated by multiple political parties since shortly after the founding of the Federal Republic of Califoria in 1999. From the 2010s to 2261, it had been the Californian Democratic-Socialist Party and the Progressive Party of California dominating Californian politics. In an effort to avoid political polarization, multiple political parties were founded at the outset of the nation's independence, most of which gained enough representation via seats in the Californian Empire Parliament to have an impact on the nation's policies and political governance.
The year 2275 brought with it a major political realignment following the temporary dissolution of Parliament in 2273, after the attempted coup carried out against the government of the Californian Confederation in 2268 by the Socialist Party of California left the national government with Lindsey A. DeWinter as de facto President, and Natalya S. Kensington, the de jure President in hiding. In the aftermath of the nearly successful attempted coup against the government, the Socialist Party of California had been dealt a significant blow to their leadership, with nationwide arrests of party leaders as well as members of which who had demonstrated both physical, military and financial support for the party and its immediate goals under the leadership of de facto Californian Empire President Lindsey A. DeWinter. With virtually all of the leadership, as well as tens of thousands of party members either on trial or serving sentences for their roles in the coup, coupled with continued surveillance by law enforcement agencies across the nation, the Socailist Party of California was declared disbanded and dissolved in Parliament on 1 November 2275.
It was during this time that the original five parties of the Californian Empire Parliament either dissolved or reorganized into eight totally new parties. Upon the recommencement of Parliament on 1 November 2275, a presidential election was held resulting in Selena K. H. DeWinter-Dévnostraéva being elected as the 5th President of the Californian Empire, an entirely new Parliament composition, and Selene Dévnostraéva becoming the 1st Empress of the Californian Empire. From the ashes of the five parties which had dominated the politics of the Californian Empire, only three consider themselves descended from the original parties with the Liberal Conservative Party and the Liberal Democratic Party seeing themselves as a continuation of the original Democratic Party and the Californian Conservative Party seeing itself as a continuation of the Republican Party.
