Plot
Price Rory is a student at the boarding school Lomond, an elite independent school whose student body is largely drawn from the children of Caldish elites. The school has been frequented by members of the Caldish Royal Family for centuries. Rory has found difficultly settling into the school due to his status as a member of the royal family as many of his classmates appear skeptical to befriend the future monarch. He shows little interest in many of the school's rituals, including its secret societies and parties.
He attends classes with the children of Caldish aristocrats, such as Dearbhla, and business owners, like Yuki. Many of these students perform poorly in their classes and pay teachers directly for tutoring in order for their grades to improve. Other students include siblings Paco and Luísa, two cuóta students who attend the school after passing the entrance exam. Like Rory, they are struggling to befriend their classmates due to their working-class background.
As Rory struggles to make friends, he ends up forming a connection with Paco. The two begin to fall in love, as Rory is captivated by the simpler lifestyle Paco, his family, and his friends represent. Their relationship draws the attention of other students, who are initially unaware the two are romantically involved. Following Dearbhla's interference, the school learns about their romance. Luísa struggles as she watches her brother face increasing ridicule from their classmates and finds unexpected support in Yuki.
The two try to navigate this new climate and Rory shares with Paco that he has always felt isolated among his family. He mentions that his father is sick and his health is declining quickly. Rory is skeptical of the role he is expected to play at such a young age and would rather pursue his passions.
News of their relationship reaches the press, who begin digging into Paco and his family. Rory's judgement is questioned due to the choice of his partner. Amid increasing attention in the press, Queen Victoria, Rory's mother, visits Lommond. She informs her son that his relationship with Paco is presenting challenges for the royal family at an already difficult moment. She encourages Rory to end his relationship with Paco, but he refuses.
After Rory's refusal, Victoria has palace aides monitor Rory closely. She also meets with the head of school in an attempt to have the two separated. Her intervention proves successful and the school takes steps to isolate the two boys. Paco is falsely placed on academic probation and, scared of losing his place at Lomond, begins to distance himself from Rory so he can focus on his studies. A reporter later confronts Rory about his relationship with Paco. He stumbles through the questions before his aide intervenes to end the interaction. Paco, already upset with his probation, lashes out at Rory. Their fight is interrupted by a phone call from Queen Victoria, who tells Rory that he must quickly hurry back to the palace. When he asks his mother why, she is heard sadly telling him that it is his father.
