Background
Background
As per tradition, elections in West Miersa take place every five years on the first Monday of September. Thus, the date for the 2021 presidential and parliamentary elections takes place on 6 September, 2021.
From the late fifteenth century, Auressian fishermen began flocking to the rich fishing waters around Surrow's coast, with most of the fishermen coming from Rythene and Tyrnica. As more fishermen established permanent settlements from the middle of the sixteenth century, it led to the creation of a "linguistic and political checkerboard" on Holcot Island where English language-speaking and Germanic language-speaking Newfoundland outports would exist next to each other, with the respective outports being under either Rythenean or Tyrnican law depending on who owned the outport.

This election is the first election since 1961 when an incumbent one-term President chose not to run for a second term, as Sylwester Wrzesiński said in his 2021 nativity speech that he would not run for a second term, with Wrzesiński saying that "it is time that Miersa is led by a new generation, one that is young, energetic, and willing to face the challenges that tomorrow has to throw at us, and not be held back by men like myself, who have the potential to hold things back."

Presidential republic
A key issue that emerged was the passage of the Third Amendment to the West Miersan constitution in October which transformed West Miersa into a unitary state presidential republic as opposed to a federalism semi-presidential republic, and added more appointed seats to the National Assembly to represent the "demographic realities" of the Miersa nation. This was supported by the governing Naprzód, who claimed that the amendment would make the West Miersan government "more representative of what the nation wants" and would "ensure the preservation of majority rule and of Miersan democracy," but was opposed by the Miersan National Party, who saw it as "a naked power-grab to forever entrench Naprzód rule for the next generation" and by the Greens, who said that the amendment forever chained "West Miersa to a new Wojdyla dictatorship, where Naprzód will rule without any genuine opposition for at least the next forty years."

Thus, a presidential republic became a major issue in the campaign, with Zjednoczeni and the Greens supporting repealing the third amendment, and Naprzód and the Agrarians supporting maintaining it.

Zjednoczeni
In response to this, leader of the Miersan National Party Aleksandra Wojdyla called for a "unity front" against Naprzód, with both Nowoczesność and Razem! accepting the offer. Although the Green Party leadership accepted the offer, the Green Party membership rejected it, forestalling Green involvement in the electoral alliance.

On 12 April, 2021, Zjednoczeni was officially established, although as there have been no precedent for electoral alliances, the National Electoral Commission spent several months deciding whether to register Zjednoczeni or not. On 24 June, 2021, they ultimately denied the request to register Zjednoczeni, meaning all Zjednoczeni candidates would be listed as being part of their constituent parties on the ballot. Zjednoczeni did not contest the decision, although it continued to campaign as a united front, with leaders from the three parties appearing side by side at joint conferences.

The Surrowese language question (Tyrnican: die Sprachfrage) was a linguistic and political controversy in the Rythenean colony of Surrow, which lasted from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century, over the status of Tyrnican in the colony, and whether or not it should be a co-official language of the colony alongside Rythenean.

Background

From the late fifteenth century, Auressian fishermen began flocking to the rich fishing waters around Surrow's coast, with most of the fishermen coming from Rythene and Tyrnica. As more fishermen established permanent settlements from the middle of the sixteenth century, it led to the creation of a "linguistic and political checkerboard" on Holcot Island where Rythenean-speaking and Tyrnican-speaking outports would exist next to each other, with the respective outports being under either Rythenean or Tyrnican law depending on who owned the outport.

Conflicts between the outports and fishing rights contributed to the Eleven Years' War, during which time Tyrnica briefly controlled the entire Surrowese archipelago from 1750 after its victory at the first Battle of Holcot Inlet until 1758 when Rythenean forces secured two victories at Holcot Inlet and Klinerhaven. After the end of the Eleven Years' War in 1759, Tyrnican fishermen in Surrow were allowed to continue living in the outports under the condition that they pledged allegiance to the Rythenean crown "with all the same rights as a Rythenean fisherman who lives on the Surrows."

Although some Tyrnophones, particularly Tyrnican officials and Tyrnican merchants left the colony, most of the Tyrnophone population in Surrow chose to stay on the island and accept Rythenean rule, particularly the fishermen who resided in the outports.

Beginnings of the language question

In the aftermath of the Eleven Years' War, some Tyrnican speakers, particularly Tyrnican officials who ran the settlements and Tyrnican merchants who did most of their trade with Tyrnica's colonies, left Surrow. However, many Tyrnican speakers living on Surrow opted to pledge loyalty to the Rythenean crown, with most of them wanting to maintain access to the fishing grounds around Surrow.

The colonial government made Rythenean the sole official language of the colony in the aftermath of the war and imposed Rythenean law across the colony, although Josiah Yates noted in 1762 that there was "very little effort or appetite by the government of these islands to try and promote the Rythenean language" in the newly-acquired settlements, and warned the colonial government that "if no effort is taken to integrate the Tyrnican fishermen into the body politic, they will behave as those they still control the Surrows."
