South Vestelia (Vestelian: Sør-Vestelia), officially the South Vestelia Metropolitan Area (Vestelian: Sør-Vestisk storbysområde) is a metropolitan area in Vestelia, Scovern. The second-largest urban area in the country[2], South Vestelia consists of the settlements of Kalstad (the second-largest city in Scovern), Gardenset, Heum, Bragernes, Rutskirke, Polmak, Valanhamn and Selvik. South Vestelia is a significant economic centre for both Vestelia and Scovern, and since federalisation has experienced significant population and economic growth. The World City Studies Institute ranks South Vestelia as a third-rate city as of 2021[6], with new developments within the area, particularly at Kalstadshavn, aiming to make the city an attractive destination for global businesses[7].

Calls for centralising the region began in the 1960s during federalisation, and intensified once it became clear that Kalstad would not be made into a federal city. In particular it was Frank Kristian Sandberg who gave an important voice for the establishment of the metropolitan region, which occurred in 1985[8], becoming the second official metropolitan area in Scovern (following Elgebugt). Since its establishment integration between the settlements has grown massively, including the construction of new highways, railways (including the rapid transit system Ikornertog) and bus routes. Economic integration also grew, with the number of people commuting into Kalstad for work rising from 9% of the city's workforce in 1974 to 26% in 2000 and 30% in 2020[9][10][11].

Currently, South Vestelia is the second-largest metropolitan area in Scovern behind Rimso–Hovedstaden[2], with an estimated population of almost 2 million as of 2023[12] and a GDP of €104 billion[3].

The metropolitan area is governed by the South Vestelia Metropolitan Council (SVSR), which is elected every five years and has a number of sub-committees tasked with various aspects of the region's governance. Controversially[13], the Mayor of South Vestelia is indirectly elected by the SVSR after elections, though it is customary for the party leader in the city to be elected as mayor. The current mayor is Jim Jan Veierod of the SAP, who has held the office since 2016.
