Frei Niinassun-Mac Pharláin, often referred to as Frei Niinassun, is a Caldish-Azmaran politician and former activist who served as the Secretary of State for Healthcare between 2022 and 2023 and has served as a Member of the Folksmot for Groonbank since 2020.
Early and personal life
Frei was born on the 29th November 1991 at Stefansburg Hospital to Azmaran politician Niina Hermansdohter and Caldish civil servant Aodhan Mac Pharláin during her mother's first term as a Member of the Folksmot for Ostlaak, making her the first Althing member to take maternity leave. Due to his mother's increasingly influential political career, being appointed Teansport and Communications in 1993 after the Workers' Party's return to power, he was largely raised by his father and maternal grandmother.
Frei would attend the North Stefansburg Ândeskul and the private, fee-paying Stefansburg High School. His attendance at the latter school from 2005 to 2009 would be the centre of a political controversy as his mother, who was serving as Internal Affairs Minister when the scandal broke, had expressed criticism of private education during her 2003 Workers' Party leadership bid. While at school, Frei excelled in political science, economics and psychology and would serve as a senior member of the Workers' Party Youth Federation. He would also study at the Mikel Hankssun School of Government between 2009 and 2012, graduating with an LMW in politics and economics in 2012.
Frei is openly gay, having publicly come out in June 2010 as his mother was serving as Thingspeaker. Since 2015, he has been in a relationship with psychologist Aksel Peturssun. He has been open about his personal struggles with anxiety and has advocated heavily for mental health awareness within Azmara.
