A container of spice

Spice is the name for a type of illicit substance or substances in demand throughout the Talin galaxy. Spice is mined or grown in several planetary systems throughout the galaxy, including those of Penvou, Yuridon, Fanato, and Uarilia. The Galactic Union attempted to keep a tight rein on the circulation of the various forms of spice, making it a frequent item for smuggling by the Citt Syndicate and Idir Collective. Most forms of spice are collected raw, then processed and refined. Some forms of spice are produced completely synthetically, without the use of any kind of natural material. Some are produced from plants. Various forms of spice have medicinal uses—not every form of spice is addictive, or even illegal.

The mining of spice is illegal and dangerous, notably taking place on planets that lay outside the jurisdiction of the Galactic Union. Slave or cheap labor is widely practiced in the extraction of raw spice.
