Ye Desheng was the first President of Huajiang after the end of the Huajiangite Civil War following the Proclamation of the Repubnlic of Huajiang coterminous with the signing of the 1881 Constitution of the Republic of Huajiang. He was seen as the political figurehead of the revolution and was appointed the president. As the president, he set out to create a non-democratic republic under his ideas of Deshengism, which is still the philosophy of the Republican Party.
