The Great War (abbreviated to GW1 or GWI), otherwise known as the Great Asuran War or the Global War, was a global war that originated and was primarily centered in Asura that began in 14 September 1895 and ended in 31 December 1899. The Great War drew over 70 million military personnel and involved fourteen different sovereign nations and their colonies. The Great War is considered one of the largest wars in Aeian History as well as the biggest was within the 19th century, and is almost as large as the Second Great War in the 20th century. The amount of casualties was enormous, with over nine million military personnel and seven million civilians reported dead as a direct result from the war. This casualty rate was a direct result the tactical stalemate caused by trench warfare during the war, as well as military technology advancing and increasing industrial sophistication. The Great War remains one of the most deadliest conflicts within human history, and have contributed to contemporary unresolved rivalries between sovereign nations dating back to this war, and has also contributed in the start of military conflicts afterwards and partially contributes to modern-day political tensions between sovereign nations.
The war involved all the great economic powers within Asura, which created a clear divide in the continent that resulted in the formation of two opposing military alliances. At the time of 1894, there were two fully formed opposing military alliances. The Grand Alliance, initially consisting of Midrasia, tir Lhaeraidd, and Carcossica with the opposed Concordat, consisting of Veleazan Dominion, Kingdom of Cuirpthe and the United Kingdom of Lhedwin. As the war expanded in size, the alliances grew in their numbers, with the joining of Newrey and Aquidneck directly into the Grand Alliance as well as the inclusion of the Liidurian-Leidense Pact as Non-belligerent allies, while the Concordat was joined by Beslaeros-Latkujvia. This eventually led to the creation of the Arabekh Theater and the Alemannic Threater .
Before the beginning of the Great War, the pre-war climate before 1895 was tense between both Midrasia and Veleaz after the victory of the Mydro-Veleazan War. With Midrasia existing as a politically divided state effectively being controlled indirectly by Veleaz and the economic repercussions it forced on Midrasia, the Midrasian state began radical and ambitious missions of diplomacy and revitalizations of armament programs while the Veleazan colonial empire focused on their continued expansion. With both Cuirpthe and Veleaz both surrounding Midrasia, the Midrasian state's first mission of diplomacy began with the state of tir Lhaeraidd, with the signing of an alliance in 1886.
The continual armament and revitalization of the Midrasian army, along with the introduction of conscription saw an extreme difference with the military, meaning Midrasia started becoming more of a military threat to Veleaz and Cuirpthe. With the tensions between Midrasia and Veleaz already in place, as well as terrorist actions by Midrasian nationalists, the looming threat of the war became impossible to avoid. The tensions between the two countries culminated with the Bombing of Perpigan, with the death of 87 people and Veleazan Prime Minister, Juan Martín Abasto. The subsequent aftermath boiled down to a war between the three members of the Grand Alliance and the three members of the Concordat during the onset of the war.
At the end of the war and the signing of the Treaty of Millennial Peace, the United Kingdom of Lhedwin, the Kingdom of Cuirpthe and the Veleazan Dominion were replaced by countries that were based on the actual status of their nation-states as opposed to their empires. This resulted in the breakup of the United Kingdom of Lhedwin into four different states, while the Kingdom of Cuirpthe and Veleaz lost swathes of land in the resulting treaty. The Millennial Peace Conference took place in 1900, headed by the Four Victors: Midrasia, Aquidneck, Newrey, and tir Lhaeraidd. The countries of Carcossica and Tyronova observed without a say, with the inclusion of the Liidurian-Leidense Pact as observers.
