Eoferwic is the largest city in Nortymba, Brytene. Compared to the larger cities in the south it has a small population, but it is an important cultural and historical centre, and is also home to the Arkengarth Academy, the primary officer training facility for the Confederate Brytisc Fleet. It is home to more than 1.5 million of the 8 million population of Nortymba, and is also the home of the current Bretwalda Cenwulf Teorell.
History
Early history
Eoferwic was originally a fortress town, built around a sacred stone circle dating back to 4000BCE. In the early years of the 6th Century CE, Ida Flamebearer arrived and forced the city to swear loyalty to the Kingdom of Brytene. Nortymba remained a part of the Kingdom until, in 811CE, Vikingr led by Gunnvar Bloodaxe landed to the north of the canton and marched to conquer Eoferwic. Gunnvar Bloodaxe promptly established the Kingdom of Jorvik, declaring himself king and ruling most of Nortymba from the ancient walls of Eoferwic.
The city returned to Brytisc ownership following the Battle of Longmoor, which saw King Eirik Bloodaxe killed in battle against King Herne I of Brytene. At the standing stones of Eoferwic, Herne married Eirik's daughter, ending the war.
Modern age
Eoferwic has retained much of its wild Vikingr culture, and is a popular tourist destination thanks to its ancient buildings and historical sites of interest. It is currently the seat of House Teorell, who own various properties in the city including Teorell Hall and the original Green Dragon tavern.
Eoferwic is also an important site for the Confederate Brytisc Fleet, playing host to its officer training facilities. Nortymba as a whole contributes almost 18% of all new recruits to the Fleet despite comprising only 13% of the population.
Eoferwic's economy mostly relies on tourism, fishery, and mining.
Arkengarth Academy
The Arkengarth Academy, founded in 1709AD, was created by Brigadier Henry Arkengarth in an attempt to reform the Brytisc officer corps in line with the sweeping reforms being introduced during the establishment of the Confederate Brytisc Fleet.
The Academy is located high in the mountains to the east of Eoferwic, behind a large hydroelectric dam facility. Access to the Academy is strictly guarded, but it is a sprawling set of buildings and underground networks which includes dormitories, training areas, armouries and maintenance bays, fitness facilities, educational centres, medical bays, life-firing ranges and more. It employs a full-time faculty of just over 300, with a support staff of 600, and has capacity for up to 4,000 students per year.
