Waldeck-Sipellia (Weranian: Waldeck-Zipelln; Sipellian: Sīpele-Valdeka), officially the Confederated Kingdoms and Landgraviates of Waldeck-Sipellia, also known as the Confederation and informally referred to as Waldeck in Estmerish language settings, is a country in located in northern Euclea in Kylaris. It is bordered by Vredlandia to the east, Wazovia to the west, Ostroszka to the south, and the Sea of Dragons to the north. The capital is Angerapp, while the largest city is Panevessa. Topographically, Waldeck-Sipellia is largely made-up of flat terrain, mostly grassland steppe; however there are also rock canyons, hills, and vast river systems around which most of the population of 52,000,000 lives.
The origins of Waldeck-Sipellia are with the migrating Couramians, who settled in south-western Sipellia in the 1st century BC. The Weranics, migrating westward from modern-day Werania, would soon follow, arriving in modern-day Waldeck during the 400s. The easternmost Couramians, calling themselves the Sipellians, broke off from the Grand Duchy of Loṭuye and formed their own kingdom in the 11th century. The Weranians made up a variety of different duchies, landgraviates, and archbishoprics, all competing for resources in the barren flatlands of the region. In the early 1500s, city-states such as Panevessa and Angerapp, in the Marijamland between Sipellia and the Waldecker states, became important cultural and economic centers. Several conflicts would be fought over this region up to the Pereramonic Wars, with Ivor the Great of Sipellia decisively defeating and annexing the Waldecker states. The Duchy of Sipellia became, for a brief time, one of the regional powers on the northern coast of Euclea, despite opposition from the Waldecker landed aristocracy. The Revolutions of 1848 increased calls for a power-sharing constitutional monarchy, and, in face of domestic crises, famines, and instability, the Compromise of 1855 federalized the Duchy into several states bound by personal union, the two largest being Waldeck and Sipellia. Despite fierce modernization in the late 1800s, the Great War destroyed much of the country's infrastructure, and the devastated post-war kingdom saw military dictator Maurīcijs Sproģis take power. Though Sproģis was credited with revitalizing a faltering economy, after his death the country reformed into the pluralistic parliamentary democracy it is today.
Waldeck-Sipellia is made up of two primary linguistic regions: the Couramian, Sipellian-speaking Sipellia and the German speaking Waldeck. These linguistic differences have been the source of historical tensions, however the Waldeck-Sipellian cultural identity is a unique one. Ruled by King Gregory V since 2003, the country is officially a parliamentary constitutional dual monarchy under personal union, though in practice it functions much like a federation. The central government shares sovereignty with the constituent states, which are de facto equal regardless of their status as kingdom, duchy, landgraviate, etc; the monarch of the Kingdom of Waldeck and the Kingdom of Sipellia is the sovereign of the Confederation, holding confederal immediacy over the monarchs of the other states.
