The Piraean Senate (Piraese: Πειραιηκή ἐκκλησία, Pireikí Ekklesia) is the parliament of Piraea located in the Palace of the Republic in Alikianos. The Senate is the supreme legislative body, holding ultimate power over all other political bodies, and represents the citizens through an elected body of Senators.
It a unicameral legislature comprised by 125 members with seats allocated following the Sainte-Laguë method. Elections are held regularly every four years, but may be called earlier at the discretion of the Premier should the Presidency give approval. The Senate has well defined powers and was conceived as a control institution of the government; in practise, the Senate passes laws, approved cabinets, gives or withdraws confidence of Premiers, issues motions of no confidence, censores ministers, approves budgets and others. The Senate has a crucial role during government control sessions, which happen every Thursday and count with the opposition inquiring government ministers about current affairs. The first session of the year after Senatorial recess is presided by the three members of the Presidency and attended by the Premier and ministers.
The current legislature is the 13th since the return of democracy in Piraea. IN the history of Piraea, this is the legislature with the largest presence of third parties other than the traditionally dominants PSEE and People's Party. The legislature gave its confidence to Stamatios Panopoulos (PSEE) and is presided by Konstantinos Baltas (PSEE).
Name
In Piraese, the name Ekklesia comes from the principal assembly of democracy of ancient Lasithi. It was used by Piraeans under the the Solarian Empire as the translation for the Solarian senate.
