Chicadia, officially the Province of Chicadia and Saint Anthony, is a province located in western Cassier. It borders Monbec to the northeast, and New Sylvagne to the southeast, and the Gulf of Chicadia and Bay of Dumont in the west. It is the smallest Cassien province by area, and its second least populous. representing only 1.12 percent of Cassier's total land area. Chicadia has an area of 105,118.78 square kilometres which includes Saint Anthony and other smaller islands in the Gulf of Chicadia and Dumont Bay. The official language of Chicadia is Gaullican, though other languages such as Ghaillish and indigenous languages are officially recognized within the province.
The province is known for its glacial coastline and lakes; low, rolling mountains within Chicadia's heavily forested interior; its seafood, which is one of the province's most important economic activities; and its unique culture and identity distinct from the rest of Cassier. Due to its proximity to the Gulf of Chicadia and Vehemens Ocean the majority of Chicadia's lies within marine and continental climate zones, with the province generally experincing mild temperatures and snowy winters compariable to those found in northeastern Euclea. Its capital and largest city is Chiboctoc.
Since the end of the last ice age, Chicadia has been inhabited by indigenous peoples, most notiably the Megsig, the Alnobaques. Following the discovery of Asteria Superior by Assim Asteris, Ghaillish mariners were the first Eucleans to arrive in the region, establishing seasonal outposts throughout the Gulf of Chicadia. In 1534, Gaullican explorer Rogerin Dumont claimed what is now Chicadia as a part of New Gaullica, with the first colonists arriving shortly after. In 1670, the majority of New Gaullica's west coast was granted to the newly established colony of Chicadia, including what would later become New Sylvagne which became a seperate colony in 1750. In the following decades the descendants of the Euclean colonists, largely made up of expelled religious and culturial minorites from Gaullica, developed into an entity that was politically and culturally distinct from the other Asterian colonies. Chicadia confederated into the Domain of Cassier as a province following the Continental Decree of 1757, an act that upset many Chicadians who saw themselves as distinct from their Cassien counterparts. Growing unrest and a desire for autonomy eventually lead many in the colonies to take up arms against the Cassien and Gaullican government in the Patriote Rebellion during the Asterian War of Secession (1764-1771). Although initially successful in routing Gaullican forces from much of Chicadia and New Sylvagne, the rebellion was ultimately put down. Following the war Chicadia was politically, economically, and culturally integrated into Cassier, though its unique culture survives to the present.
Etymology
The exact origin of the term "Chicadia" are unclear. The mostly widely accepted theory is that the name is partially derived from the Megsig word akadie, believed to mean "fertile land". Alternatively, it may be derived from the Megsig word Sipekne'katik, which "place abounding in groundnuts" or "place where the wapato grows.", referring to an area that covered central Chicadia.
Demographics
The province of Chicadia has a total of 1,983,563 inhabitants according to the 2018 Cassien Census, making it the second least populous province after Terre-Belle. While 58.1 percent of the province's inhabitants live outside of urban areas, Chicadia's small geographic area makes it the third most densely populated province at 18.07 persons per square kilometre.
