The 10th Ostric regional election occurred on 2 February 2020. The established parties in Ostry, including the governing Social Democratic Radical Party and the Ostric People's Party suffered a shock defeat, seeing both parties attain a record lowest number of the vote and seats, while the Ostric Coalition suffered a complete wipeout, exiting the Dorada for the first time in its history. In turn, a record number of newly registered parties, five in total, entered the Dorada for the first time, including an electoral upset by the Citizen’s Alliance for Ostry, which came a narrow second with 21% of the popular vote and three seats. After difficult negotiations, a unity "Marirana" coalition was formed between the SRPO, Alliance, and People's Party.
Background
The previous election in 2016 returned a SRPO government under Johann Schöttmer, in a minority coalition with the Ostric Liberal Party and with the National Consolidation Party support from outside. In late 2019, Schöttmer resigned as Minister-Chairman to run in the 2020 Social Democratic Radical Party of Werania leadership election, leaving Nataliô Kohl as party leader and Minister-Chairwoman. She failed a vote of confidence on 22 December, due to NKP leader Linus Hoch voting against the government over possible electoral reform, causing a snap election to be called.
During the campaign, the established parties in the Dorada continually lost ground to smaller parties, especially the Citizen's Alliance for Ostry, which garnered a large swing in support after what was considered a respectable showing at the "small" debate for extra-parliamentary parties on 12 January. By the campaign's last week, polls showed a potential three-way tie between the SRPO, People's Party, and Alliance.
Electoral system
The electorate elects all fifteen members of the Dorada using single non-transferable vote in one island-wide multi-member constituency.
