General elections were held in Vierzland on Saturday 14 January 2017 to elect all 745 members of the Federal Assembly. The incumbent government of Kaspar Vahl and his National Democratic Party held a 392-seat majority as a result of its landslide victory in the 2012 elections. The party and Vahl maintained approval ratings averaging between 65–75% going into the election.
On election day, the NDP won 60.1% of the vote and 448 seats, securing their majority. Vahl was reconfirmed as Chancellor on 14 February 2017. The Democratic Labour Party suffered its worst electoral result since 1997. DAP leader Wilhelm Spindler announced that he would not stand as the party's leader in the next election in response to its poor results.
The elections were controversial domestically and abroad. The Conservative People's Party issued a formal complaint of electoral fraud to the Elections Office, which was later rejected. The Vonzumier-based Global Democracy Institute did not allege fraud, but stated that the elections occurred in a "politically and socially controlled environment that had placed undue pressure on free media and opposition candidates."
