The Republic of Anikatia has developed and possesses weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and nuclear weapons. The number of nuclear warheads in Anikatia's arsenal is a state secret and is therefore unknown. There are varying estimates of the size of Anikatia's arsenal. Information released by the CDI projected that the DSRA had a peak stockpile of around 6,000-8,000 warheads in 2001. Although since the end of the Cold War intelligence sources claim Anikatia possessed an estimated 4,748 total nuclear warheads of which only 1,800 were strategically operational.
Chemical weapons
Anikatia has experienced attack by chemical warfare (CW) on the battlefield and suffered hundreds of thousands of casualties, both civilian and military, in such attacks during the Great Eastern War. As a result, Anikatia has promulgated a very public stance against the use of chemical weapons. After the DSRA's developed nuclear weapons the military leaders stated that the country no longer needed to have or maintain it's chemical weapons, since the dread of chemical weapons would only be needed by those countries that do not have nuclear weapons.
Despite this the DSRA was known to have possessed an arsenal of chemical weapons throughout the Cold War. Possibly beginning with a small stockpile of phosgene captured from Yakimese troops. Following the end of the Cold War, Anikatia declared an arsenal of 8,667 tons of chemical weapons in 2002 consisting of:
By the end of 2011, Anikatia had reduced its chemical weapons stockpile by more than 75 percent.
Biological weapons
Anikatia has a well-developed biotechnology infrastructure that includes numerous pharmaceutical production facilities bio-containment laboratories for working with lethal pathogens. It also has highly qualified scientists with expertise in infectious diseases. Some of Anikatia's facilities are being used to support research and development for biological weapons (BW) defence purposes. During Cold War the DSRA was believed to have developed an offensive biological warfare capability. Since the end of the Cold War it is believed that Anikatia has ended it's offensive biological weapons programs.
Nuclear weapons
History
Anikatia begun it's initial develop of nuclear weapons during the Great Eastern War where the Imperial Republic of Anikatia worked closely with allies such as Belfras, and Arthurista on secret nuclear programs. While this significantly contributed to domestic development of nuclear weapons the end of the conflict and outbreak of the civil war and collapse of the Imperial Republic and establishment of the DSRA by the communist forces heavily damaged the local program. Former allies of Belfras and Arthurista strongly opposed the new government and cut all assistance during the civil war.
Instead the DSRA sought assistance from communist Estovnia which happily supplied advisors and equipment to help the fledgling new state. This assistance in combination with captured information from the previous government, scientific research and espionage directed against the Arthuristan and Belfrasian programs led to the swift development of nuclear weapons. By 1960 the DSRA had produced it's first domestic nuclear weapon, assistance from Estovnia allowed a rapid development of these systems into launch vehicles creating the first Anikatian ICBMs and SLBMs which replaced Estovnian ones on early Tarango and Mokae-class SSBNs.
Nuclear arsenal of Anikatia
The exact numbers of nuclear warheads remain a subject of estimations and ongoing constant discussion depending on their respective source.
In 2001 the DSRA estimated to have around 8,000 active strategic nuclear warheads in its arsenal according to reports by the World Council. The DSRA also had a considerable number of tactical nuclear weapons, although there were no treaty requirements for it to publish data on these weapons so the exact numbers remain unknown. An estimate by the CDI claimed approximately 7,652 deployed tactical warheads wiith the strategic nuclear forces of Anikatia including:
- Land based Strategic Rocket Forces: 382 missiles carrying up to 1,407 warheads; they employ immobile (silos), and mobile delivery systems.
- Sea based Strategic Fleet: 63 submarines carrying up to 564 SLBMs carrying up between 3,592 warheads.
- Strategic Aviation: 365 bombers carrying up to 2,653 cruise missiles.
As of Mid-2015, Anikatia's strategic arsenal estimated by the CDI to have shrunken to 4,568 active warheads, including: 190 ICBMs with 1,140 warheads, 31 SSBNs with 520 SLBMs carrying up to 2,324 warheads and 270 bombers with 1,104 warheads.
