Commonwealth Magic

The experience of magic within the Commonwealth is comparatively short. The beginnings of magical phenomena can be traced near irrefutably to the event referred to as the Opening, which saw thee appearance of inter-dimensional portals to the multiverse. The Commonwealth, in an attempt to avoid some manner of nasty surprise from without quickly explored these portals, finding on the other side another world, one with new nations, and with different physicality. In particular, what was later found out to be the Mist Continent, early explorers encountered a new type of energy that seemed to be pervasive in the area.

This energy source was called by the discoverers Ætherium, and it was found everywhere in abundance in the continent. To the surprise of the discoverers, they did find a trace amount of that energy in what was at that point, the Commonwealth as well, though it was in amounts low enough to have not ever been found by those not looking for it. The discovery of ætherium spurred a burst of research into the possibilities as to what the energy could do. Something which Mystrian native laughed at, as they had long since practiced manipulation of ætherium, a practice which they called magic.

In the near twenty years since the opening, the Commonwealth has had sufficient time to study the practice of magic, as well as the nature of ætherium and those with the ability to use it. The application process has taken longer however given the wide variety of applications that can stem from the manipulation of the æther. However, the experimentation, study, and practice of magic will continue for the foreseeable future.
