Cruisers have occupied a varying set of roles in the Cacertian Royal Navy since the unification of Cacerta. The first official designation and usage of the term “cruiser” comes from the development of a variety of protected and armored cruisers that had been developed by the Lombardo Matriarchy prior to and during the First Cacertian War of Unification. Many of these types of warships would later see action in the second war and to a lesser degree in the third. Nevertheless, the evolution of the ironclad warship resulted in a significant uptick of cruiser production in Cacerta.
After the foundation of the Cacertian Empire, armored cruisers and battleships went on to play a major role in Empress Elliana’s aggressive implementation of gunboat diplomacy. The access to abundant iron resources in Arkoenn, however, eventually lead to diminishing production of cruisers in favor of battleships. Cruiser production was nearly halted entirely after the introduction of the HMS Eerika Waterly-Davion in 1901 and the subsequent dreadnought arms race. By this time destroyers had effectively replaced cruisers as scouts and escorts.
The poor performance of the Grand Fleet during the Divide War, however, brought back the questions of the role of cruisers in he Cacertian Royal Navy. Grand Admiral Andrea Doria, who had long advocated for restarted cruiser production, began a massive reformation program of the nation’s naval armament which resulted in the so-called Cruiser Race between the Republic of Syara and the Cacertian Empire. By the start of hostilities in the Siduri War in 1934, over 90 cruisers had been commissioned in the CRN.
Development of modern technologies in the post-Great Wars era also lead to additional development for the cruiser class. Most modern-day cruisers of the Royal Navy fall under similar guided-missile roles as destroyers and battleships, but their smaller build has resulted in them becoming the main part of the CRN’s expeditionary and regional component.
