National politics
In April 2017, Kean announced he would stand as a candidate for the Liberty Party during the 2017 Comhthionól election in the Spálgleann Bay North constituency. Throughout the campaign Kean was a vocal supporter of O'Reilly and was central to the Taoiseach's urban appeal initiatives. He received more first preference votes than any other candidate in the constituency. Due to his high profile and close ties to the Taoiseach, it was widely speculated he would be given a Cabinet post following the election. However, he was the primary sponsor of the City of Spálgleann Electoral Reform Act which reformed the capital's electoral system by introducing single-transferable vote.
Foreign Minister
Kean was named as the replacement for Foreign Minister Julie Royce, who resigned after controversy regarding comments she made on a hot mic. He was named by the Taoiseach on 25 January 2018 and was confirmed by the Comhthionól Náisiúnta on 1 February.
