Akiko Sugiyama (3 June 1995) is a Lucian officer serving in the Lucis Army under the Auxiliary Territorial Service Corps. She also serves as a member of Task Force 141 in a non-combatant role.
Unlike most of her family, She enrolled in the University of St. Georgius, following her cousin, Tatsumi to the university. Following her graduation, She enlisted in the Lucis Army under the Auxiliary Territorial Service Corps. She is often known for her scarlet red hair and her very close resemblance to her grandmother, Tsukuyo Kushineda. Because of this, she inherited her grandmother's traits, most notably Brigadier Kushineda's love of tea.
In her free time, Akiko is a singer and was a member of a band with her college best friend, Yuki Kaizuka. Initially offered a contract to be a singer, she turned down, hoping to follow her grandmother's steps.

Akiko was born in Caernnarvon. She is the younger sister of Yukiko Sugiyama; the cousin to Reiko Sugiyama and Tatsumi Sugiyama; and a granddaughter of famous Lucian general Archibald Sugiyama and Tsukuyo Kushineda.

Akiko is known for her love of her great-grandmother, Tsukuyo Kushineda. Kushineda, in return, dotes on Akiko. Her elder cousin, Reiko, believes that Akiko's resemblance to her great-grandmother during her youth was a reason why she loves her so much.
She met Naoto Kitagawa, the 2nd son of famous Field Marshal Sir Kiriya Kitagawa during Exercise TRIOC in 2015. She began dating him in 2018 following Yamato Kitagawa's arrest. After 3 years of dating, she proposed to her, which Akiko accepted following Kushineda's grant of blessing to Naoto.
