Appointer | Monarch of Sydalon |
Term length | Life tenure or until accession as Monarch |
Inaugural holder | Belandra I |
The Prince of Petra, or Princess of Petra, was the title granted to Belandra of Ghant following her conquest of Petra during the Second Crusade, of which Belandra was the first and final sovereign. The title merged into the Sydalene Crown after Belandra's death, and since the 14th century has been been the primary title of the heir apparent to the Sydalene Crown.
King Edward of Sydalon was the first heir apparent to be invested as Prince of Petra, which by royal decree was established as a non-heritable title and is not effected by succession rights (ie; cannot merge into the Crown). The title is granted as a personal honor to the heir apparent, and other titles are granted in conjunction, such as Duke of Ostracine, and Lord of Ajklabejta. The wife of the Prince of Petra is entitled to the style of "Royal Highness" and the title Princess of Petra, but the husband to an invested Princess of Petra is entitled to no honors other than those granted by the reigning Monarch.
Hugh, Prince of Petra was invested as Prince upon his mother's ascension, on 3 September 2017. He is the youngest Prince of Petra since his great-grandfather, King Jordan IX became prince at the age of 9.
Role
The Prince or Princess of Petra is the heir apparent to the Monarch of Sydalon. The role comes with no official responsibility in government, though the Monarch may delegate any duties, responsibilities or public role at his or her sole discretion. The Prince does maintain a role in the formal governance of the Principality of Petra, and plays a key role in the swearing in of the Chancellor-General of the Order of the Holy Lance and the opening of the domain legislature.
The Prince of Petra may also issue royal warrants.
