Hugh, Prince of Petra (Hughes Emmanuel Gabriel Desiderius; 10 April 2014) is the heir apparent to the throne of Sydalon as the eldest child of Queen Melisende III and her first husband Godfrey Galan. In addition to the official title Prince of Petra, he bears the historical titles of Duke of Ostracine, and Lord of Ajklabejta. As he was expected to someday become King, his birth was widely celebrated throughout Sydalon. Hugh has often accompanied his mother domestic royal tours and even foreign visits.

Birth

On 15 December 2013, the Sydalene Royal Household announced that Melisende, Princess of Petra and Godfrey Galan, were expecting their first child. At the time, Melisende was heir apparent, meaning any child born would be second in the line of succession and a future Monarch due to absolute primogeniture succession. Melisende and Godfrey continued to reside at Velia House in Castellum, where Melisende was a student at Empress Alexandra College, Castellum throughout the pregnancy.

Hugh was born on 10 April 2014 at University Hospital, in Caelimontium, Castellum ab Alba, at 2:30 WBT. His birth was announced hours later by a royal heralds outside of Palis de Aultavilla, in Ostracine, and Castra Rubea, in Sydalon. His name was announced during a national broadcast on RXK at 8:00 SST. He was named Hugh for his ancestor Hugh the Harp King and numerous Kings of Sydalon.

Hugh was baptized at Church of the Annunciation, in Kerkouane, on 12 August 2014, by Patriarch of Sydalon Belad Abdeshmun, with water from the Yarden River. His godparents are Princess Maria of Latium (his mother's cousin), and Nathan IV of Ghant (his father's cousin).

Official appearances

Hugh made his first official appearance after his baptism in Kerkouane. His first foreign visit occurred in September 2014, when he accompanied his parents during a visit to Galan, Langael, Ghant. Hugh resided at Velia House in Castellum immediately after his birth, sparingly making public appearances until his mother's graduation in spring 2016.

Since his mother's ascension to the throne, Hugh has been present on most domestic tours and recently the occasional foreign visit. He accompanied his mother during a 2016 visits to Yisrael and Fakolana. In 2018, he made his first official visit to Belisaria when his mother attended a state visit in Lihnidos.

Education

In July 2018, Hugh started his education at St Peter's Nursery School. The Royal Household has not indicated whether Hugh will attend formal schooling or be educated privately as all Sydalene princes before him.

Titles, styles, honors and arms

  • 10 April 2014 – 3 September 2017: Lord Hugh de Aultavilla de Galan
  • 3 September 2017 – present: His Royal Highness The Prince of Petra

At the time of his birth, his mother was second in line to the Sydalene throne as the eldest child of the heir apparent, which resulted in the expectation that Hugh would become King. Despite his place in succession, Hugh was not granted royal styles or titles due to his descent from the female-line. While there were calls from court to grant Hugh royal styles and titles, he did not earn any Sydalene rank until his mother's ascension to the throne in 2017. This royal practice has changed since his mother's ascension, where heirs of the sitting Prince of Petra will pass on royal styles and titles regardless of gender. Prior to this, Hugh held the courtesy rank of "Lord" as a male-line descendant of Donal, Lord of Langael. Due to Sydalene royal practices, his surname until his mother's ascension was "de Aultavilla de Galan".
