Hugh, Prince of Petra (Hughes Emmanuel Galen Desiderius; 10 April 2012) is the heir apparent to the throne of Sydalon as the eldest child of Queen Melisende III and her first husband Godfrey Galan. In addition to the official title Prince of Petra, he bears the historical titles of Duke of Ostracine, and Lord of Aquilanida. As he was expected to someday become King, his birth was widely celebrated throughout Sydalon. Hugh has often accompanied his mother domestic royal tours and even foreign visits.

Birth

On 15 December 2011, the Sydalene Royal Household announced that then Melisende, Princess of Petra and her husband Godfrey Galan, were expecting their first child. At the time, Melisende was heir apparent, meaning any child born would be second in the line of succession and a future Monarch due to absolute primogeniture succession. Melisende and Godfrey continued to reside at Velia House in Castellum, where Melisende was a student at Empress Alexandra College, Castellum throughout the pregnancy.

Hugh was born on 10 April 2012 at University Hospital, in Caelimontium, Castellum ab Alba, at 2:30 WBT. His birth was announced hours later by a royal heralds outside of Palis de Aultavilla, in Ostracine, and Castra Rubea, in Sydalon. His name was announced during a national broadcast on RXK at 8:00 SST. He was named Hugh for his ancestor King Hugh Galan and three Kings of Sydalon.

Hugh became heir apparent to the Sydelene throne and Prince of Petra two months after his birth. He was baptized at Church of the Annunciation, in Fabria, on 12 August 2012, by Patriarch John IV of Sydalon, with water from the Yarden River. His godparents are Richard I, Duke of Valmosia (his mother's uncle); Belandra of Rema (his mother's cousin); Marina I, Countess of Asota (his mother's lady-in-waiting); and Nathan IV of Ghant (his father's cousin).

Official appearances

Hugh made his first official appearance after his baptism in Sarpeta. His first foreign visit occurred in September 2013, when he accompanied his parents during a visit to Galan, Langael, Ghant. Hugh resided at Velia House in Castellum immediately after his birth, sparingly making public appearances until his mother's graduation in spring 2016.

Since his mother's ascension to the throne, Hugh has been present on most domestic tours and recently the occasional foreign visit. He accompanied his mother during 2016 visits to Yisrael and Ascalzar. In 2017, he made his first official visit to Belisaria when his mother attended a state visit in Lihnidos.

Controversy

On 23 October 2018, government emails from members of Council of Ministers were leaked by Ghant-based Honeydrippers. The Honeydippers scandal implicated People's Party Leader and Minister of the Interior Pelae Arvad, Minister of Foreign Affairs Desiderius de Villepena, and Minister of Agriculture Michael Galea. The leaked emails included discussions among a number of ministry members discussing rumors of an affair between Queen Melisende and an unknown individual or individuals leading up to the birth of Hugh. The scandal prompted the resignation of the government ministers involved, and a dissolution of the National Assembly with new elections by Queen Melisende. The Queen did not address the allegations as to Hugh's paternity that were discussed in the emails.

Education

In July 2017, Hugh started his education at St Peter's Nursery School. Hugh has since been primarily educated by private tutors.
