The Kurultai (literally "gathering") is a traditional Mongol legislative format which is today the unicameral legislature of the Mongol Uls. Composed of 100 members, the modern Kurultai serves to pass legislation and provide confidence to the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The 4th and incumbent Kurultai is the Korla Kurultai.

Composition

The Kurultai is composed of 100 members. 66 are elected by party-list proportional representation in multi-member constituencies. 33 represent the Mongol Clans, while the Bogd Gegeen holds a seat ex-officio.

Conventions of the Kurultai

A Kurultai was traditionally convened for matters of great importance and magnitude, such as the election of a Khan. Today, a Kurultai is convened every two years, immediately after national elections. A Kurultai is named after the location in which it is convened; for example, the Hovd Kurultai was convened in the city of Hovd. Thus far, four all-Mongol conventions of the Kurultai have been convened (other, non-"ecumenical" Kurultai conventions have been held, for example in the Golden Horde).
