In 1991, he entered politics and worked as an aide to Director George Dopian, and later as the Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1996. He joined the Directory in 1996, following his successful election in Bayazet. Following his 2008 defeat, Barkudar moved to Armavia and, in 2010, was elected director. He became First Secretary in 2010, at the start of the 26th Directory.
