Politics

Valtriva is a Unitary Parliamentary Republic. The head of state of Valtriva is layed down in the basic law of the Valtrivan Republic as the President. The President of the Valtrivan republic resides in the Katranić Palace in the Valtrivan capital Aketerina and is elected by all Valtrivan citizens over the age of 18. Presidential elections take place every five years with a president being able to serve up to two terms of five years. The role of the President of Valtriva is largely ceremonial as the President acts as the nation’s figurehead. The ceremonial roles undertaken by the President include the signing of passed legislation, the formal appointment of the Premier and the dissolution of parliament. The Premier of Valtriva acts as the head of government. The premier is elected every 5 years and has no term limits although it is usual for premiers to serve for around one or two terms. The Premier is held to account by the Unicameral State Assembly which is responsible for passing legislation and is made up of 156 members. The State Assembly is responsible for holding the premier and his cabinet to account which manifests itself in questions posed to the premier and his cabinet during Assembly sessions.

Valtriva has a highly independent judiciary which is broken down into the high court followed by regional and then municipal courts. Valtriva is a multi-party state. The State Assembly as well as the Valtrivan electoral system is set up so that no one party can have an absolute majority. The norm in Valtrivan politics thus is that parties must form a government through coalition. Since the 1990’s Valtrivan politics has been dominated by two parties. The People’s Right and The party known in English as The Socialist Choice. Since 2015 Socialist Choice has been in power in a coalition with the Green Party.

Energy

Electricity generation in Valtriva is still largely fossil fuel based although the current coalition government which includes the Green Party is aiming to reduce the nations reliance on fossil fuels and move towards more renewable sources of energy. Valtriva is one of the worlds leading exporters of coal which for years has propped up its energy supply. The share of energy from renewable sources has increased to 18% in 2020 thanks in part to the current government, specifically the Green Party which has increased the share of renewable energy tenfold. Since the 1960’s the Valtrivan hover has made several endeavours into nuclear power. Valtriva is an importer of oil and gas for which it relies on its neighbours Dulebia and Valimia.

Religion

Language

The national language of Valtriva is Valtrivan which stands out from its neighbouring languages and linguistic groups due to centuries of Valimian influence to the old Valtrivan language which was more closely related to Rovinian and Dulebia. This influence from the Valimian language has led to the Valtrivan tongue becoming a linguistic outlier and a rather unique language in its region. The Valtrivan region of Mälelkzhynsk is the only region of Valtriva to have a second official language with Valimian being a predominantly spoken language in the region it was made an official regional language in 1988. There are certain Raiyons in Aketerina Region which have Rovinian as an official language but not the entire region. Valtrivan language took a back foot in the centuries that Valtriva was under the empire of Valimia. The fact that Valimian was the preferred language of commerce and the aristocracy made a further Valimian influence upon the Valtrivan tongue.
