Politics of Vyvland

The Alliance for Independence (more commonly known as Alliance, in Vyvlander Alianc vro Sulvsdaannes, see infobox for other languages) is a Vyvlander political coalition representing regional and ethnic minority interests in the Vyvlander Parliament, primarily for the Helish, Geadish and Namorese communities resident primarily on the edges of Vyvland.

The Alliance is an electoral alliance of parties with a wide range of political viewpoints, from social democrats such as the Helish People's Party (HVP) to right-wing conservative nationalists such as the Helish Front (HV). Other major parties include the centre-right Helish Union (HU), Christian Democrats of Helland (KDH), the Geadish People's Party and United Namorese and Islanders. Historically, all the parties were centrist to right-wing, although with the admittance of the HVP in 2008, the Alliance has become a broad political movement. Present candidate members include the Swedish Party, whose main power base is Pegerm, the historic home of the Swedes in Vyvland.

The Alliance currently holds 21 of 580 seats in the Vyvlander Parliament, but no seats in the Provincial Diets due to their status as a coalition; individual parties represent their own interests on a province level. In addition, individual politicians are affiliated first with their constituent party; as such, it is possible for parts of the party to be in government and parts to be out of government at the same time. This occured, for example, from 2005-2009, when the HVP sided with the Socialist Party and Greens. However, Alliance members elected to Parliament are elected from a party list in provinces where the party is active, which causes some allegations of bias towards certain parties in Helland, where multiple regionalist parties compete under the Alliance banner.

The Vyvlander name, Alianc vro Sulvsdaannes, although translated into English and regional languages as 'independence', does not necessarily imply this concept in Vyvlander. Rather, sulvsdaannes (directly translated as self-standing-ness) refers to anything from independence to moderate regional autonomy, and thus is more ambiguous.
