By-elections in Venadia

Jump to navigation Jump to search

By-elections are used in Venadia when constituency seats for the Great Veche become vacant between legislative elections. While party list deputies are simply replaced by the party, in constituencies a by-election is called for. All parties and independents who contested the constituency are eligible to contest the by-election at no charge, while other parties or individuals are required to pay a deposit of 5,000 NSD. The deposit is regained if their candidate received at least 5% of the vote or at least 15,000 of the vote. Even if the alignment of the Great Veche changes as a result of by-elections, the party-list seats are not altered to maintain proportionality.

Proninsk and Uyagorod By-election

The deputy for the East Viniyagorod constituency became vacant as a result of the sitting deputy, Vladimir Korozchev, resigning after an extensive corruption trial. Korozchev sat for the Socialist Party, and the eleven parties and three independents contested the constituency. Korozchev resigned on the 4th of January 2016, and the by-election was held on the 15th of March of the same year.

The deputy for Proninsk and Uyagorod in Tonovsk died after complications in a skiing accident on the 3rd of May, and the by-election was held on the 4th of July. The by-election was primarily between the Socialist Party, who nominated university professor Irina Uljanova, and the Communist Party who nominated trade union organizer Vitaliy Kropotkin. The Liberal-Republican Party decided not to nominate their own candidate, instead support the social-democratic Uljanova instead of the communist Kropotkin who had come in second-place in the 2015 election. Uljanova was also endorsed by numerous local and national organizations, while Kropotkin received the backing of the Venadian Confederation of Labour. The by-election was unusual for the low number of nominees, the centrists and centre-right parties in Tonovsk opting to support Uljanova instead. Kropotkin's narrow victory came as a shock to the Socialist Party, as Proninsk and Uyagorod had been one of their safest seats in the country.
