The Chief Qadi of Sharifistan is the highest post in the Sharifistani judiciary and a post in the Sharifistani cabinet responsible for the Ministry of Justice of Sharifistan.

History

The office of Chief Qadi was created in 1922 following the declaration of Sharifistani independence. Since then Chief Qadis have all been Islamic scholars of the Maturidi school and most have been of aristocratic heritage.

Powers

The Chief Qadi has the power to: Appoint and dismiss all other judges in the Islamic courts of Sharifistan (Criminal law courts are Islamic courts as are courts for Muslim Personal Law and financial law).

Appoint and dismiss the Chief Muhtasib of the Islamic Religious Police. Appoint and dismiss the head of the Sharifistani Department of Rehabilitation and Prisons and all prison governors and Parole Board Directors and Deputy Directors (as well as in theory all parole officer and prison officers).

Appoint and dismiss civil servants in the Ministry of Justice (in practice only used for senior civil servants).

Formulate policy for the Ministry of Justice (subject to the commands of the Sultan of Sharifistan).

Nominate candidates for the position of Attorney-General.

Declare any law or executive action unconstitutional.
