The Commandant of the Royal Marines (CRM) is normally the highest-ranking officer in the Aquitaynian Royal Marines. It is a four-star general position and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The CRM reports directly to the Minister of the Navy and the Secretary of State for Defense. The CRM is responsible for ensuring the organization, policy, plans, and programs for the Royal Marines as well as advising the Monarch, the Prime Minister, the Privy Council, and the Parliament on matters involving the Royal Navy. Under the authority of the Minister of the Navy, the CRM designates Marine personnel and resources to the commanders of unified combatant commands. The commandant performs all duties necessary to the smooth operation of the Royal Marines, or delegates those duties to subordinates under his name. This position is purely administrative in nature, with no operational command authority over Royal Marine forces.
The commandant is nominated for appointment by the Monarch, for a four-year term of office, and must be confirmed by the House of Lords. The commandant can be reappointed to serve one additional term.
