Foreign relations of Hindia Belanda

The foreign relations of Hindia Belanda are the responsibility of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, whose primary aim is to maintain a neutral foreign policy in peacetime which is free of alliances, in order to remain neutral in the event of a major war. Between 1950 and 1991, Hindia Belanda took this armed neutrality stance, which helped securing the territorial integrity of Hindia Belanda from foreign invasions, but consequently and infamously marred its relations with fellow contituent country the Netherlands during the Cold War. Hindia Belanda temporarily abandoned its armed neutrality posture at the end of the Cold War in order to enter into a security treaty with NATO, by virtue of its status as a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This policy was retained for a decade until the Hindia Belandan populace voted to annul the security treaty in the historic 2001 NATO Referendum, effectively making the country neutral ever since.
