The Kazbastad is the unicameral legislature of the unitary Aimilian Republic; it has plenary legislative power bounded by the Constitution Act, the basic law of Aimilia, and the Natural Rights Act, which incorporates the Declaration of Universal Natural Rights. It sits in the capital, Kakzazna, and has fixed terms of five years' length. The current Speaker, who runs the chamber, is Pababe Kigintimym, and the current Chancellor is Manham Batsatindim. The Chancellor is elected by the Chamber as head of government.
Elections
Closed party-list proportional representation is used to elect members to the legislature for fixed five year terms; there are elections for the whole chamber every five years. The electorates used are the five provinces of Aimilia. The Electoral Court oversees the election, including adjudicating on redistribution. Presently, all provinces are equally represented with eight seats, because their populations are approximately equal, but this may change.
2015 election
The 2015 election, held on the 11th January 2015, saw the Conservative Group become the largest political party in the Chamber for the first time, while the National Liberal who had been in majority government for several terms were defeated. It is generally accepted this swing occurred because of the poor economic state of the country at that time. However, they still did not have a majority; a coalition was formed, led by the Conservatives with the Liberals, Manham Batsatindim becoming Chancellor.
However, after the events of the July Spring in 2019, National Liberal voted to merge with the Conservative Group; three of its members defected out of this merger, promptly refounding National Liberal. The current composition of the legislature is therefore with 7 less National Liberal and 7 more Conservative Group members than were at the 2015 election.
2020 election
An election is typically scheduled for the second Saturday of January, which in 2020 will be the 11th. Polling suggests major swings to the Sotirian Democrats and the Party of Labour, away from the Conservative Group and National Liberal.
