Languages in Sloughttopia
Sloughttopia has 6 official languages that can be separated into 3 groups, Asiatic, European, and Afro-Asiatic. These languages come from very different places but each one of them shape the history and culture of Sloughttopia. Places where older civilizations were set, like Samoflop, are more likely to have more speakers of older languages. Places of newer establishment are more likely to have more recent languages. Most of the population speaks English, more precisely, about 80% of the population is fluent in English and . English has recently been stopped from being taught in schools as a mandatory class and has replaced it with Salahtubyah. The education system has done this to encourage the embracing of the country's own language. Some also criticize the government, saying that this is a way to eliminate western influence on it's people.
Asiatic Languages
There is only one official Asiatic language in Sloughttopia, which is Korean. This language is spoken by an estimated 720 thousand people, mostly in Hanslay. Korean comes from the Korean mountain dwellers that arrived in Sloughttopia in an unknown time between 2CE and 1801. The mostly live in the mountains of Northern Hanslay and Southern Leiville. Another Asiatic language is Sloughttopia is Japanese. Japanese is almost purely a trader, military, and leisure language and is rarely used in day-to-day life. Japanese also has around 40,000 speakers, only 17% of them are native speakers. These two languages contribute to the reason the Japanese is not recognized as an official language of Sloughttopia with only about 0.4% of the population speaking it.
European Languages
There are two officially recognized European languages in Sloughttopia; English and French. Like previously stated, English is a major language in Sloughttopia and most people use it in day-to-day life, documents, school work, and newspapers are in English. French is most popularly spoken in in Samoflop, where there are about 1.4 Million speakers. French came from French immigrants, where it replaced the Somali language, only to be preplaced again.
Afro-Asiatic Languages
There are three official Afro-Asiatic Languages; Arabic, Somali, and Salahtubyah. Arabic is the second most spoken language in Sloughttopia with 5.5 Million speakers, Mostly in Minajaji and Jiacakke. Arabic is present in Sloughttopia as a religious and knowledgeable language but is also used in some people's day to day life and is a first language for some. Somali has about 1.2 Million speakers, again, mostly in Samoflop. Somali immigrants came to Sloughttopia and started some of the first civilizations in Sloughttopia. Somali is mostly a language mostly spoken by native speakers but is represented heavily in agriculture and cuisine with many new crops and dishes being named from words and phrases in Somali. Salahtubyah isn't largely spoken at the moment but is estimated to gain 700 thousand per year from now on as the government is encouraging the knowledge of the language.
