Legatia, officially known as the Legatian Republic (Legatian: Respublica Legatium ), is a country in Edavia. Legatia is bordered by Auvenia to the west and Borland to the north. Legatia is a unitary state consisting of 8 subdivisions known as provinces. Legatia's climate ranges from alpine in the north and northwest, Mediterranean climates predominately throughout the central area of the country and more temperate areas in the south. The capital of Legatia is Augusta, among the world's oldest cities, which serves as the seat of government. Its largest city is Coriolanus, a cultural and economic hub located in the south of Legatia.

Etymology

Legatia's name is derived from the Legatii tribes of central Legatia in what is know known as the Surgentia province, the lands surrounding the city of Augusta. King TBD established the 'Kingdom of Legatia' in 914 AD as his holdings grew larger than the bounds of Surgentia itself.

Legatia is a unitary consular republic divided into eight provinces, one extraordinary administrative zone, two territories and one constituent commonwealth, Acadia . Laws passed by the Legatian Council take precedence over any and all provincial laws, and in some circumstances may take precedence over territorial laws. The Acadian Commonwealth, while disallowed from conducting separate foreign affairs and maintaining a separate military force, virtually operates as an independent country and has not been subject to direct control from Augusta since the granting of its commonwealth status in 1924 following the First Great War. Territories are subject to legislation from the Legatian Council but generally conduct a vast majority of their own administration locally. Territories, however, are not represented by voting members in the Council.

Military

The Armed Forces of the Legatian Republic are the military forces of Legatia. They consist of 6 branches: the Army, Navy, Air Forces, Marine Corps, Strategic Forces, and the Praetorian Guard. The Legatian Armed Forces, consisting of nearly 2 million active duty and 3 million reserve members, is one of the largest armed forces in the world. Legatia is one of the few nations in the world that are armed with nuclear weaponry.

The Legatian Army is the nation ground warfare branch. It is the largest and most heavily funded branch of the Armed Forces. It has 732,540 active duty members and is composed of mechanized, armored, airborne, air assault, and light infantry formations. It is highly modernized and has seen a number of deployments in recent years on both combatant, humanitarian, and peacekeeping missions.

The Legatian Navy is a blue-water navy and is the world's largest navy in terms of ships and overall tonnage. Hosting 6 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, 5 amphibious assault vessels, and various other surface and sub-surface combat vessels. The Legatian Navy also operates a number of nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarines. It is widely considered the most powerful navy in the world.

The Legatian Air Forces are the aerial combat forces of the Legatian Republic. They consist of a large and varied amount of combatant and support aircraft, and include one of the largest amount of fifth-generation combat aircraft in the world. The Air Forces operate a number of aircraft designated for nuclear strike duties.

The Legatian Marine Corps is the maritime expeditionary and naval infantry force of the Armed Forces. While nominally considered a part of the Navy, the Marine Corps are functionally considered a separate branch. Marines have fought in every major ground-based conflict since the beginning of the First Great War, and are treated as an elite, high-readiness, high-mobility rapid reaction force. They are the smallest out of the combatant branches of the Armed Forces.

The Legatian Strategic Forces are the newest branch of the Armed Forces, formed in 1994 as a cross-branch merge of all cyber and space branches; as well as all land and silo-based nuclear weaponry as well as all units relating to nuclear storage and maintenance.

The Praetorian Guard functions as a protective and gendarmerie service, and is not organized or used as an organized combatant force. Regardless, they fall under the Defense Magistrate as one of its components.

Law enforcement and justice system

Law enforcement in Legatia is provided by a number of agencies. Most law enforcement is handled by law enforcement organizations organized at the provincial and lower levels. All provinces in the Republic provide their own provincial police forces, which generally receive funding but little administrative oversight from the central government. Law enforcement agencies organized at the national level generally provide specific services, including counterterrorism, national security, and other functions. Some examples of this include the Praetorian Guard, which is funded at the national level and provides security and specialized services primarily in the Augusta area, as well as a select few areas of significant importance to the government, including the Consular retreats across Legatia and certain government buildings.

The Coastal Service provides coastal search and rescue, maritime interdiction, and local coastal defense operations in addition to maritime law enforcement in all coastal areas and riverways of the Republic. While a military branch, in times of peace it serves primarily as a law enforcement and support group under the Homeland Magistrate.
