2023–24 Liga Campiontia season |
Liga Campiontia, officially Imperialis Campiontia Calcitro (Latin: Imperial Football Championship), is the top flight professional association football league in Latium. Consisting of 20 clubs, it operates a promotion and relegation system with it's immediate lower-level league, Liga Calcitro 2.
The Liga Campiontia acts as a corporation of 20 football clubs, who act as shareholders. Seasons run from early August to May, with teams playing a total of 38 games, not including domestic cup games or confederation league games. Each team plays each other in the league twice, once home and once away. The majority of games are played on Saturday and Sunday, but with no more than two games a week being played on either Tuesday or Thursday.
Liga Campiontia holds the largest television contract of any Latin professional sport, valued at over $15 billion a year. The league also has various television contracts abroad, including the nations of x, y, and z. Liga Campiontia boasts an average attendance of 48,239, one of the highest of any football league. The league currently ranks X in UBCS coefficient and X in the FCI worldwide in the UBCS coefficient ranking.
Of the 92 clubs to have competed since the inception of the Liga Campiontia in 1892, seventeen have won the title. The teams with the most championships are: MCS Ascanium (30), Imperialis Ianiculum (28), Athletica Adrianopolis (17), Honoria Ancia (14) and Internationalis Utica (8). Historically, MCS Ascanium, Imperialis Ianiculum, Athletica Adrianopolis, Honoria Ancia, and ASIL Ascanium have been considered the big five, with Arminium Flaminiana and Internationalis Utica occasionally competing for top honors. The current champions are Imperialis Ianiculum.
History
Format
Fixtures
There are 20 clubs in Liga Campiontia. Clubs participate in a season that begins in August and runs until May, in a double round-robin format, 38 fixture season, playing each club at home and on the road. Teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The league champion is the team that holds the most overall points at the end of the season. Table placement tie-breakers are decided based on goal differential, goals scored, and head-to-head record. Should no tie-breaker resolve the placement tie, a neutral site game is held between the tied teams to determine placement.
Liga Campiontia remains the only of the major leagues in Latium that does not features a post season playoff.
Promotion and relegation
As with all professional sports leagues in Latium, Liga Campiontia operates under a system of promotion and relegation. Due to the league's placement at the top of the Latin football pyramid, this promotion and relegation relationship only exists between Liga Campiontia and Liga 2. The three lowest placed teams in Liga Campiontia are relegated to Liga 2, and the top 2 teams in Liga 2 are promoted to Liga Campiontia, with the final promotion slot determined through a promotion playoff between the teams that finish third through sixth in Liga 2.
Prior to 1986, Liga Campiontia featured 22 teams, and four teams were promoted or relegated at the end of the season.
